Bolt Prospects Prospect of the Week: 10/23-10/29

So which member of the Falcons #1 line do you think we picked?

C Blair Jones, Springfield (AHL)

It's been a tough season thus far in Springfield with the Falcons checking in with a 3-5-0 record through eight games. There have been some bright spots however, and perhaps none have shined more brilliantly than rookie center Blair Jones. The 20 year old out of Moose Jaw in the WHL was electric this weekend as the Falcons top line abused Lowell for 5 goals in a 6-4 comeback win on Friday night. Jones posted 2 goals, his first two as a professional, and added 2 assists as well and was named third star of the game. The following day in Lowell in the rematch of the home and home series, Jones struck for his third goal of the season. Just a 4th round pick in the 2005 draft, Jones is currently tied with teammate Eric Healey and two others for 13th in the AHL in scoring and his 11 points ranks him third in the AHL in rookie scoring. Can you say "steal"?

Good to see Jones is having

Good to see Jones is having success in the AHL. Ever since the rookie camp, he's become my favorite prospect and I think he's going to be a good NHLer. Can't wait to see him in a bolts uniform one day. If he continues to do well, do you guys think he will be called up to replace someone like Karlsson this season or do you think the brass will keep him down all year to keep getting used to the pro game?

Don't expect a lot of call ups...

I don't think you're going to see much movement between Springfield and Tampa because of the tight cap situation. Literally, the Bolts have less than $500k wiggle room. Only if someone goes on extended IR and their salary doesn't count against the cap will we see someone called up from Springfield. Personally, I think Ramo could do about as well (or better) than what I've seen of Holmqvist so far, but with the cap situation, I doubt we'll get a look at Ramo in Tampa this year unless the Bolts are out of the playoffs and unload some salary at the trade deadline.

Regarding Karlsson vs. Jones. Karlsson was signed to play third line center, and that's what he'll do for better or for worse unless he goes down with an injury. Lots of one-way contracts on the Bolt squad. Jones doesn't need to be rushed anyway. A year in Springfield will do him a world of good.

He's Not Ready Yet

I would give him another 30 games in the AHL and reevaluate him some time in January. He's within a year of being ready, but he's not quite there yet.

He's got a shot at AHL Rookie of the Year if he keeps up his pace.

Assuming NAS doesn't send Radulov back to Milwaukee...

I think a guy like Radulov, worst case, is probably going to be up and down and only get about 40 games in the AHL. If Jones stays in the A for 65-70 games (I think he'll get a cup of coffee at some point) and he keeps putting up points at this pace, he's got a shot.
