Matt Smaby scored his first professional goal on his first professional shot 45 seconds into the 1st period Saturday night vs. the Hartford Wolfpack in a 3-2 Springfield victory. The other two goals were scored by Captain Norm Milley and Defensmen Andy Delmore. Sean Burke got the start in goal and stopped 28 of 30 getting the win in his first AHL game. Rookies Justin Keller and Blair Jones each collected their first professional points as well. Jonathan Boutin and Darren Reid missed the game due to injury.
The Falcons played a full 60 minutes in this one at a very high tempo, it was great to watch....and the first complete game I've seen them put together since early last season.

Well, Sean Burke actually showed in Springfield and in his interviews didn't sound as depressed about being in Springfield as most of it's residents are.
"It was nice to get back on the ice and get some work in," said Burke, who spent the 2005-06 season with Tampa Bay. "I just want to come in and work hard and be part of the team. Having played in Hartford earlier in my career, it's nice to see the area once again, both of my kids were born in Hartford, so it's been a while, but the new MassMutual Center looks great."
Burke met with members of the media after practice and took some time to meet with teammates. Falcons forward David Spina skated with Burke this summer in Phoenix, Arizona and was happy to see the netminder.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 - DAY 3 RECAP
Another day of double sessions with a morning workout and afternoon scrimmage. Doug O'Brien, Blair Jones and Karri Ramo were back with the Falcons. Stirling paired Jones, Blatny and Kvapil for the scrimmage as well as Keller, Reid and Cavanaugh on another line. Stirling said it was another good day of practice and they look forward to the preseason game on Friday at home vs. the Wolfpack.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 - DAY 2 RECAP
For the second straight day, the Falcons went through morning workouts, followed by an afternoon scrimmage at the MassMutual Center. Zdenek Blatny, Eric Healey and Marek Kvapil skated together during the scrimmage, while Dan Cavanaugh and Darren Reid also stayed paired on the same line during day two of training camp.
The Springfield Falcons returned for an afternoon scrimmage at the MassMutual Center. Falcons forward David Spina scored a pair of goals, while Andre Deveaux also scored during the 60-minute workout.
Coach Stirling sounded very positive about the energy level and intensity of the practices through the first two days and he also said that he was making plans for Sean Burke in Falcons Camp.

Came across this info on the AHL's website. I'm unsure if these changes are the same in the NHL, but they could have an affect on scoring in the AHL this season for sure:
The maximum allowed curvature of a player’s stick has been increased from half an inch (½â€) to three-quarters of an inch (¾â€).
The home team now has the option of shooting first or second in a shootout. Previously, the visiting team always shot first.
Requests for stick measurements during a shootout must be made prior to the referee blowing his whistle to begin a shootout attempt. If the stick is deemed to be legal, the requesting team forfeits its next shootout attempt; if the stick is deemed to be illegal, the offending team forfeits that attempt and the offending player becomes ineligible to participate in the rest of the shootout.

The Springfield Falcons will have three pre-season games two at home and one away. Tix are only $5.00 at the Civic Center. It's a great chance for fans in the Springfield area to get a glimpse of quite a few players who may help the Falcons and Bolts at some point in the future, as well as a few players who may be called up from Johnstown during the season.
2006-07 Springfield Falcons Preseason Schedule:
Friday, September 29 Vs. Hartford Wolf Pack 7:35 PM MassMutual Center
Saturday, September 30 Vs. Providence Bruins 7:05 PM MassMutual Center
Sunday, October 1 Vs.
