Blatny Released and Going To Europe

Springfield Falcons Release
Springfield, MA – The Springfield Falcons, proud members of the American Hockey League, announced today that they have mutually agreed to release forward Zdenek Blatny and allow Blatny to sign with MODO of the European Elite League.

Blatny originally signed a standard American Hockey League contract with the Falcons on August 22, 2006 and appeared in 19 games this season collecting six goals and seven assists for 13 points.

Blatny has played in 25 career NHL games, five with Boston and 20 with the Atlanta Thrashers. Blatny was originally drafted by the Thrashers in the third round (68th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Blatny split three seasons (2001-2004) between the Thrashers and the Chicago Wolves before spending the 2004-05 campaign playing in Europe.

Blatny got his work visa and will be in the lineup for both Falcons games vs. Norfolk tonight and tommorow. Burke will start one game, Ramo will start one game. Boutin is still nursing an injury. Darren Reid will also be back in the lineup after an early send down due to a groin injury. The Falcons had good practices this week and left for Virginia on Thursday. Defensemen Sylvain Dufresne is still awaiting word on his work visa, but it should be here within the next 72 business hours at the most. Falcons play the Norfolk Admirals tonight and Saturday with both games starting at 7:15p EST

10/7 Falcons Win Opener

Matt Smaby scored his first professional goal on his first professional shot 45 seconds into the 1st period Saturday night vs. the Hartford Wolfpack in a 3-2 Springfield victory. The other two goals were scored by Captain Norm Milley and Defensmen Andy Delmore. Sean Burke got the start in goal and stopped 28 of 30 getting the win in his first AHL game. Rookies Justin Keller and Blair Jones each collected their first professional points as well. Jonathan Boutin and Darren Reid missed the game due to injury. The Falcons played a full 60 minutes in this one at a very high tempo, it was great to watch....and the first complete game I've seen them put together since early last season.

Falcons Camp Day 4 Wrap Up

Well, Sean Burke actually showed in Springfield and in his interviews didn't sound as depressed about being in Springfield as most of it's residents are. "It was nice to get back on the ice and get some work in," said Burke, who spent the 2005-06 season with Tampa Bay. "I just want to come in and work hard and be part of the team. Having played in Hartford earlier in my career, it's nice to see the area once again, both of my kids were born in Hartford, so it's been a while, but the new MassMutual Center looks great." Burke met with members of the media after practice and took some time to meet with teammates. Falcons forward David Spina skated with Burke this summer in Phoenix, Arizona and was happy to see the netminder.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 - DAY 2 RECAP For the second straight day, the Falcons went through morning workouts, followed by an afternoon scrimmage at the MassMutual Center. The Springfield Falcons returned for an afternoon scrimmage at the MassMutual Center. Falcons forward David Spina scored a pair of goals, while Andre Deveaux also scored during the 60-minute workout. AHL Rule Changes Approved

Came across this info on the AHL's website. I'm unsure if these changes are the same in the NHL, but they could have an affect on scoring in the AHL this season for sure: The maximum allowed curvature of a player’s stick has been increased from half an inch (½”) to three-quarters of an inch (¾”). The home team now has the option of shooting first or second in a shootout. Previously, the visiting team always shot first. Requests for stick measurements during a shootout must be made prior to the referee blowing his whistle to begin a shootout attempt. If the stick is deemed to be legal, the requesting team forfeits its next shootout attempt; if the stick is deemed to be illegal, the offending team forfeits that attempt and the offending player becomes ineligible to participate in the rest of the shootout.

Falcons Announce Pre-Season Schedule

The Springfield Falcons will have three pre-season games two at home and one away. Tix are only $5.00 at the Civic Center. It's a great chance for fans in the Springfield area to get a glimpse of quite a few players who may help the Falcons and Bolts at some point in the future, as well as a few players who may be called up from Johnstown during the season. 2006-07 Springfield Falcons Preseason Schedule: Friday, September 29 Vs. Hartford Wolf Pack 7:35 PM MassMutual Center Saturday, September 30 Vs. Providence Bruins 7:05 PM MassMutual Center Sunday, October 1 Vs.
