Owen Sound Attack 3 @ Barrie Colts 4 (SO)
D Jake Dotchin, OS: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
Season totals: 3 GP, 0-2-2, +2, 4 PIM
Barrie scored with 30 seconds left in the game to send the contest to overtime. Lightning prospect defenseman Jake Dotchin was not on the ice for the game-tying goal. Jets first rounder (2011) Mark Scheifele, who “should” be in an NHL camp right now, had a goal and an assist for Barrie, but did not convert his shootout attempt on Rangers pick Jordan Bennington. Bennington, as longtime Bolt prospects followers will remember, was a tandem-mate of former Lightning prospect Michael Zador when Owen Sound won the OHL championship. Zador, who was drafted ahead of Jaroslav Janus in the 2010 draft, appears to be out of hockey now.
Erie Otters 5 @ Peterborough Petes 1
D Slater Koekkoek, PBO: 0-0-0, -1, 2 PIM (cross-checking)
Season totals: 3 GP, 0-1-1, -3, 4 PIM
The Petes were coming off a road win and played well, outshooting the Otters 48-25, but were stymied by Columbus second rounder Oscar Dansk (pictured). The import player from Sweden was named first star of the game.
Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 3 @ Val-d’Or Foreurs 2
It was a quiet night for both Lightning prospects on the scoresheet as Paquette’s Armada defeated Sergeev’s Foreurs, 3-2. Swiss defenseman Christian Marti (undrafted) scored with 14 seconds left in the game to give the Armada the win.
Ontario Hockey League
Saginaw Spirit 2 @ Owen Sound Attack 5
D Jake Dotchin, OS: 0-0-0, +1, 2 PIM (roughing)
Season totals: 2 GP, 0-2-2, +2, 4 PIM
Dotchin had two assists in Owen Sound’s opening night win in Windsor, but couldn’t hit the scoresheet in the Attack’s home opener. He’ll take the win, no doubt. Owen Sound’s Daniel Catenacci (Sabres) had a goal and an assist for First Star honors.
Peterborough Petes 4 @ Ottawa 67’s 3
D Slater Koekkoek, PBO: 0-0-0, -2, 2 PIM (tripping)
Season totals: 2 GP, 0-1-1, -2, 2 PIM
Koekkoek went scoreless, but his team earned a big road win in Ottawa, 4-3. Nick Ritchie, who is expected to go in the first round of the 2014 draft, was First Star for Peterborough with a goal.
Ontario Hockey League
Owen Sound Attack 6 @ Windsor Spitfires 1
D Jake Dotchin, OS: 0-2-2, +1, 2 PIM (roughing)
Dotchin picked up where he left off in the playoffs last season, contributing offensively with two assists in Owen Sound’s season opener. Dotchin had three assists in five playoff games last spring. He snapped a personal 14-game regular season scoreless streak tonight. Dotchin was drafted by the Lightning in the sixth round of this summer’s draft. Cameron Brace (undrafted) had two goals and an assist for the Attack.
Oshawa Generals 5 @ Peterborough Petes 2
D Slater Koekkoek, PBO: 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM
Koekkoek returned to the Peterborough lineup after not only missing all but the Petes’ first 26 games last year, but the last couple weeks of the preseason this year. He was named Peterborough's captain in the offseason before being knocked out of their first preseason game with a badly bruised shoulder. Knocking him out of that game was Columbus prospect Boone Jenner, who had two goals and an assist for Oshawa tonight. Koekkoek was playing his first game since November 27, 2011. He had shoulder surgery last fall. The Lightning took him 10th overall in this summer’s draft.
Former Lightning prospect Geoffrey Schemitsch, an alternate captain for the Generals, had an assist in the game. The Lightning chose not to sign him in the spring, allowing him to re-enter the draft. He was not selected. Schemitsch was traded to the Gens from Owen Sound last year.
Played midget for the Cambridge Hawks where he had 8 goals and 27 points in 30 games. Selected in the 4th round, 70th overall by Owen Sound in the 2010 OHL Priority Draft.
Did not make the Attack out of camp and played for the Cambridge Winter Hawks of the GOJHL where he had 5 goals and 15 points in 41 games.
Made his major junior debut, scoring 3 goals and 19 points in 64 games with Owen Sound. Rated the #139 North American skater by NHL Central Scouting Service. Selected in the 6th round, 161st overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
"Big, raw blue-liner has come looong way since training camp. Skating is still not a strength, but has improved a TON. Very strong upper body and plays physically - regularly knocks even strong forwards off their feet. Good defensive zone awareness and sound positioning. Reads and anticipates puck movement well. Shows surprisingly strong patience with the puck and a willingness to handle it and make plays. Hard shot from the point and good decisions in distribution. Makes good D-to-D passes, but show inconsistent accuracy on his outlets. Plays a steady, unspectacular game, but may not have the speed or footwork to play at a higher level.
Projection: Heavy-footed organizational depth guy.
Style compares to: Mark Fraser" (Red Line Report)
Big, strong young man who is a hitter. Good awareness and good positionally. Reads the play well. Big, hard shot. Shot up developmentally, as he had zero major junior experience before this season.
Skating has improved, but he's still on the slow side with poor footwork. Outlet passing needs work, as well.
