Tri-City dropped a big game on the road against rival Lincoln, but Des Moines’ loss at home means the Storm stays five points up for the last playoff spot in the West. Both teams have three games remaining.

Thirteenth-seeded Baie-Comeau, fresh off a sweep of fourth-seeded Victoriaville, was no match for top-seeded Saint John, who scored nine against the Drakkar on Friday night to take a 1-0 series lead. Lightning prospect Danick Gauthier scored his sixth of the playoffs in the win and led the team with five hits. Minnesota prospect Zack Phillips had two goals and two assists for the Sea Dogs. Charlie Coyle, another Wild prospect, had a goal, his 10th of the playoffs. Game 2 is Saturday night.

The Spirit were coming off an upset of fourth-seeded Sarnia in the first round. Namestnikov was scoreless for the third time in the last four games. He started the game alongside former Lightning camper Seth Griffith, who had two assists in Game 1. Game 2 is Sunday in Michigan.

The good news for Cape Breton is it’s over. Saint John “only” scored five goals against them in Game 4, after scoring 13, 8 and 8 in the first three games. Gauthier scored his fifth goal of the series in Game 4. The Sea Dogs will face Baie-Comeau in the quarterfinals.

3-Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 4 @ 14-Gatineau Olympiques 3 (OT)
QMJHL First Round – Blainville-Boisbriand wins best of seven series 4-0

Playoff Totals: 4 GP, 1-2-3, -7, 10 PIM
Season Totals: 51 GP, 6-26-32, -13, 55 PIM

In what was probably the last junior game of his career, Adam Janosik (pictured) had a goal, assist, and was named second star as the Olympiques couldn’t hold a lead and fell to the Armada in overtime. A former third round pick of the Lightning, Janosik is up for a contract from the Lightning. If he’s not signed by June 1, he goes back in the draft. He could be signed by AHL Norfolk to a tryout agreement and play and practice with the team, or be assigned to ECHL Florida. There doesn’t appear to be any open spots with either club, however. Perhaps he’s brought in to practice with his future team.

4-Victoriaville Tigres 4 @ 13-Baie-Comeau Drakkar 5 (OT)
QMJHL First Round – Baie-Comeau wins best of seven series 4-0

D Daniel Milan, VIC: Did not play
Playoff Totals: 3 GP, 0-0-0, -2, 0 PIM
Season Totals (MON, VIC): 62 GP, 2-9-11, -16, 73 PIM

Tigres fans have to be furious after their fourth-seeded club just got swept by the 13th-seeded team. At least this game was close, won in overtime by the Drakkar. The previous game was a blowout. Milan did not play in Game 4, which made Game 3 the final game of his junior career. He’s already signed to an NHL contract and like Janosik could join the organization in some fashion this year with a tryout agreement. If not, he’ll join next season. It’s been a disappointing year statistically for Milan, who had 40 points last season. While signed for his defense, few expected him to finish with 11 points in 62 games, especially in the wide-open QMJHL.

Coyotes pick and Team Canada WJC veteran Mark Visentin allowed five goals on 23 shots as Niagara had their 2-0 series lead completely erased by eighth-seeded Oshawa. Columbus pick Boone Jenner, a favorite of Bolt Prospects heading into the draft last summer, had a goal and two assists for the Gens. Former Lightning draft pick Brock Beukeboom was scoreless in Game 4 for Niagara. His rights were traded to the Blues in the Eric Brewer trade last year. He had 16 points in 47 games for Niagara this season.

Mercy. Saint John crushed Cape Breton for the third straight game, this time 8-2. They’ve scored 29 goals in three games. Gauthier was first star for his two goals on Tuesday. Minnesota prospect and former Sharks pick Charlie Coyle also had two goals to give him eight goals and 12 points in three games. He had an assist taken away from his six point game in Game 1. The slaughter will likely end Wednesday in Sydney in Game 4.

Janosik’s junior career may only have one game left in it as the Armada are on the verge of a sweep in their first round series with Gatineau. Game 4 is Wednesday night in the Olympiques barn. Janosik’s assist was his first point of the playoffs.

4-Victoriaville Tigres 3 @ 13-Baie-Comeau Drakkar 5

Fourth-seeded Victoriaville fell in an 0-3 hole in the series to the 13th seed, and did it by allowing a snowman in Game 3. The Tigres coach is likely in hot water considering Victoriaville had Memorial Cup aspirations not too long ago. The Drakkar can sweep the Tigres on Wednesday in Game 4.

The defending Clark Cup champs were too much for the streaking Storm on Saturday as they beat Wilcox and Tri-City 4-1. Tri-City scored first in the game before allowing four unanswered goals, the last of which was scored into an empty net. Sioux City won tonight and leapfrogged the Storm into fifth. Tri-City is in sixth, four points up on Des Moines, who has a game in hand (seven games left).

Saint John scored five fewer goals than they did Friday night, but still pulled together, toughed it out, and managed to put up a snowman on the Eagles. Cape Breton only managed 16 shots compared to the Sea Dogs’ 47. Saint John out shot them 50-19 on Friday, winning 13-4. Charlie Coyle (Sharks) had a hat trick for the second straight night. He has 11 points in the first two games of this series. Game 3 is Tuesday in Sydney.

Omaha Lancers 1 @ Tri-City Storm 5

G Adam Wilcox, TC: Win, 28 saves on 29 shots, *First Star*

Season Totals (with Green Bay): 9 GP, 7-2-0, 2.27 GAA, .918 sv%, 2 SO

Wilcox (pictured), the reigning USHL Goaltender of the Week, got another start for the Storm and got another first star award. Unofficially that’s about seven first stars in the last month. He’s given up only three goals in his last three games while stopping 100 shots. That’s pretty good. On Friday Wilcox stopped 28 of 29 against conference-leading Omaha. Tri-City stayed in fifth in the West with the two points, but put four points between them and seventh place Des Moines for the final playoff spot. The top-6 teams make the postseason in each conference.

Saint John opened defense of their Memorial Cup title with a 13-4 thrashing of Cape Breton. The Sea Dogs outshot the Screaming Eagles 50-19 in the game. Cape Breton actually held a 2-1 lead midway through the first period before Saint John turned up the heat. Gauthier had four points in the game, which tied his playoff high set last year in 18 games. Impressive. Sharks first rounder (traded to Wild) and former Boston University star Charlie Coyle had a hat trick and three assists for the Sea Dogs. Also impressive. Game 2 is Saturday night.

Namestnikov scored what turned out to be the game winning goal in the first period off a great individual effort. He added a third period power play assist to help Michael Houser (undrafted) and the East’s top seed shut out Windsor in Game 1 of their opening round series, 3-0. Game 2 is Saturday. Namestnikov had five points in six playoff games last season.
