The defending Clark Cup champs were too much for the streaking Storm on Saturday as they beat Wilcox and Tri-City 4-1. Tri-City scored first in the game before allowing four unanswered goals, the last of which was scored into an empty net. Sioux City won tonight and leapfrogged the Storm into fifth. Season Totals (with Green Bay): 9 GP, 7-2-0, 2.27 GAA, .918 sv%, 2 SO

Wilcox (pictured), the reigning USHL Goaltender of the Week, got another start for the Storm and got another first star award. Unofficially that’s about seven first stars in the last month. He’s given up only three goals in his last three games while stopping 100 shots. That’s pretty good. On Friday Wilcox stopped 28 of 29 against conference-leading Omaha. Tri-City stayed in fifth in the West with the two points, but put four points between them and seventh place Des Moines for the final playoff spot. The top-6 teams make the postseason in each conference.

Saint John opened defense of their Memorial Cup title with a 13-4 thrashing of Cape Breton. The Sea Dogs outshot the Screaming Eagles 50-19 in the game. Cape Breton actually held a 2-1 lead midway through the first period before Saint John turned up the heat. Gauthier had four points in the game, which tied his playoff high set last year in 18 games. Impressive. Sharks first rounder (traded to Wild) and former Boston University star Charlie Coyle had a hat trick and three assists for the Sea Dogs. Also impressive. Game 2 is Saturday night.

Wilcox put up the same stat line for the second night in a row: one goal allowed, 36 saves, and yet another first star award. Unofficially that's six in the last month. With a loss by Des Moines, Tri-City moved into the final playoff spot in the West, two points ahead of the Bucs, who have two games in hand. Eight games remain for the Storm, who are just one point behind Sioux City for fifth. Fargo sits above Sioux City.

In his last game of the season, newly-signed Lightning prospect Danick Gauthier didn’t perform a miracle and catch Zach O’Brien for the league’s goal scoring title, but with two goals he set a new franchise record for Saint John with 47 goals in one season. His 46th goal set a new family record – his father, Daniel, had 46 goals for Victoriaville in 89-90. Gauthier crushed his previous personal highs (11-19-30, +21) in every major category. Saint John, which finished 50-15-0-3, will begin their run to defend the Memorial Cup starting on Friday.

London got a win over last place Erie in the Knights’ last game of the regular season, and combined with Plymouth’s loss to Sarnia, clinched the conference’s top seed heading into the playoffs. Namestnikov finished without a point for the 10th time in his last 14 games. He set new career highs this season for points, assists, plus/minus, and penalty minutes. He was eight off his 30-goal high, which he set last year in 68 games.

5’8” Yanni Gourde (undrafted) had a goal and four assists to increase his league-leading point total to 122. No one else is even close to him. With 11 points this season, Milan won’t come close to touching the 38 points he put up last year as a rookie with Moncton. He is already signed to an NHL contract with the Lightning. The Tigres are currently one point up on Quebec for the fourth seed in the league with one game remaining.

Saint John did something no team has done in the history of the QMJHL Wednesday when they clinched the league’s regular season championship for the third straight year. Congrats to the Sea Dogs for that accomplishment. Helping them on Wednesday was newly signed Lightning prospect Danick Gauthier (pictured), who tied for the team lead with three points and led the club with a plus-5 rating. Prospect of the Week (3.6.12)

This season Bolt Prospects introduced our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their on-ice contributions. There are no trophies or plaques, but we feel it’s second only to receiving a professional contract.

We wanted to highlight prospects throughout the year to help fans get better acquainted with the next round of Lightning stars while recognizing the prospect’s achievement on the ice.

This week’s BP Prospect of the Week award goes to … Danick Gauthier, C, Saint John (QMJHL)

That gives him, unofficially, six in the last few weeks. With Sioux City idol on Sunday, Tri-City has taken over the final playoff spot in the USHL’s Western Conference.
