Florida took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission before later squandering a 5-3 lead in the third period and losing the game in overtime when Greenville's Brendan Connolly took a cross-ice dish from former Everblade Sebastien Piche and delivered a wrister that beat Muse high. Connolly's goal came with just twenty seconds remaining in the extra session. Florida had a good night on special teams, scoring on three of its four power play opportunities and killing off all but one of Greenville's five stints with the man-advantage, but Greenville countered by carrying even-strength play for the bulk of the second and third periods. Hutchings, who earned an assist on Florida's first goal after he fired a shot Brandon MacLean buried on the rebound, extended his scoring streak to four games (during which he has 5 G and 2 A). Landry was quiet and Nagle rode the pine tonight. Daniel Milan and Maxime Langelier-Parent remain inactive. Florida (5-5-3) now heads to Charleston to face South Carolina (6-9-1) for a two-game weekend set that starts tomorrow night. Both teams are currently tied at the bottom of the South Division standings with 13 points.

Prospect of the Week: November 12, 2012

This week we continue our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their recent contributions on and off the ice.

This week’s winner scored five goals in three games.

The Prospect of the Week for November 12 is … Alex Hutchings, winger, Florida (ECHL – USA)

While many focusing on how the NHL lockout is affecting NHL players, coaches, administration, and even arena workers, the work stoppage is having a drastic effect on minor league players. Players like Alex Hutchings.

Florida, which rallied from an early two-goal deficit and held a 5-2 lead until midway through the game, gave one of the league powerhouses all it wanted in an entertaining game it ended up losing in dramatic fashion by allowing Gwinnett to score five times over a ten-minute stretch spanning the late second and early third periods. Special teams play was every bit the difference-maker as the Gladiators power play unit proved nearly perfect, scoring four of the five times they held the man advantage. The Gladiators outshot the Everblades 40-30 for the game. Nagle's numbers were ugly and there's the old adage that a goalie needs to be a team's best penalty-killer but the team defense in front of him bears some scrutiny as well. Hutchings, who scored for the third straight game to earn his sixth point (5 G, 1 A) during that span, brought the Everblades within a goal with about a minute and a half remaining in the game. Landry also scored, notching his first goal of the season early in the second that, at the time, capped off a five-goal Everblades run. Daniel Milan and Maxime Langelier-Parent remain inactive. Florida (5-4-2) now has time to lick its wounds before hitting the road to face Greenville (9-4-1) next Thursday in another tough divisional showdown.

F Nate Thompson, AK: 1-0-1, +1, 4 SOG, 0 PIM
Season totals: 12 GP, 1-6-7, -1, 16 PIM

Alaska blew a two-all game wide open by finding the net four times in the second period and riding the large lead to its third-straight victory against Las Vegas. Tommy Mele and Nick Mazzolini, duplicating his performance last night, scored twice for Alaska while Nate Thompson buried a feed from Joey Crabb on a shorthanded two-on-one break to tie the game at one. For Thompson, it was his first goal of the season. Crabb was later ejected from the game along with Las Vegas' Channing Boe as both were given game misconducts after fighting each other. Alaska (8-4-0) is now set to return home and prepare for divisional-rival Colorado (6-4-2) on Wednesday.

It was a big night for Lightning prospect Alex Hutchings whose hat trick (video) helped propel Florida over Elmira in a game that got close towards the end before Hutchings was able to bury a breakaway opportunity with just under two minutes remaining to put the game out of reach. Hutchings scored for the second straight game and now has five points, sixteen shots and is +3 through four games to start November. Pat Nagle had the night off as Hurricanes prospect John Muse started in net for the Everblades and stopped 34 of 37 shots to earn his second win of the season, his first since October 12th against Orlando. Daniel Milan and Maxime Langelier-Parent remain inactive. Florida (5-4-2) returns to action tonight at home against a divisional foe, the Gwinnett Gladiators (9-3-1), who are currently atop the South division.

F Nate Thompson, AK: 0-0-0, E, 5 SOG, 2 PIM (tripping)
Season totals: 11 GP, 0-6-6, -2, 16 PIM

Alaska, buoyed by Nick Mazzolini's two goals and Mark Guggenberger's 30 saves, held off Las Vegas Friday night. After drawing first blood with a power play tally, the Aces regained the lead late in the second period when Mazzonlini got his stick on the puck as it came through the the low slot, deflecting it past the Wranglers' Joe Fallon, who had a solid night himself turning away 35 shots including several stops during a 5-on-3 opportunity for Alaska midway through the third period. Las Vegas held Alaska's locked-out trio of Joey Crabb, Brandon Dubinsky and Nate Thompson in check tonight, as they collectively managed ten shots and were penalized twice. Alaska (7-4-0) continues its short series against Las Vegas (3-5-1) tomorrow night.

Florida found itself up 3-0 just past the halfway point of the first before Elmira soon after scored twice in under a minute to send the Everblades into the first intermission nursing a slight lead. However, unlike other recent games, Florida managed to extend their lead twice in the second and then close out a pressing Elmira squad in the final frame. Matt Marquardt got the high honors Wednesday night, scoring twice (including the game-winner) and registering the team high in shots for the game. Alex Hutchings and Pat Nagle didn't earn any honors tonight but, Hutchings, who was blanked the past two games, managed his third multipoint game of the season and Nagle, who was was well-tested, mostly held the fort for Florida. Hutchings also earned his first fighting major of the season as part of a melee midway through the final frame. Daniel Milan and Maxime Langelier-Parent remain inactive. Both teams have a rest day before the Everblades (4-4-2) and Jackals (6-3-0) go at it again on Friday night in Estero.
