NHL Game Night: 11-1-19 Lightning at Islanders

Fragile Lightning come unglued late on the Island.

TB-2
NYI-5

Andrei Vasilevskiy allowed 4 goals on 25 shots for the loss, including an uber softie he cannot allow in the final frame of a game where the Lightning are trying to mount a comeback.

What's strange is that this was a very evenly played game where the Lightning were pressing well in the Third for an equalizer and the wheels just came completely off. Poise and confidence seemed to be completely lacking tonight, and it just seems like the team is unsure of itself. That's crazy considering what they were last regular season, but that's what I saw tonight.

Alexander Volkov was -1 with 1 shot and 1 hit in 14:04. I'd burn the tape of this game. He just didn't look ready for prime time. Playing on a line with Stamkos and Kucherov, if he really was ready for this level we'd have seen him flash more through two games. He hasn't.

Ondrej Palat was the game's third star. The early season resurrection he's experience along with the found money that has been Kevin Shattenkirk's play have been clear plusses in an other wise murky early campaign.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say getting outshot 42-23 and needing seven goals to get across the finish line aren't a winning formula. That said, I recognize the team was down two of its top four defensemen and that the team really struggles to adjust whenever Hedman isn't out there. I also recognize that a loss tonight would've put the Lightning behind the eight ball for this ten game segment of the season, so they managed to do what needed to in order to at least keep their head above water through this patch of adversity. It's still a long way from what you want/need, though.

Carter Verhaeghe was -1 with 1 shot in 10:30.

Alexei Volkov was -2 with 1 hit in 12:49 in his NHL debut.

NHL Preseason Game Night: 9-28-19 Panthers at Lightning

Preseason ends with an epic Russian goaltending duel.

FLA-1
TB-0 (SO)

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped all 28 shots he faced in regulation and OT before allowed 1 of 2 to convert in the penalty shot session for the SO loss. Considering how bad he looked in his last preseason outing, hard not to be happy with Vasilevskiy's work tonight.

Alexander Volkov was +1 with 4 hits in 13:39.
