Cornell opened their regular season with a shutout win over visiting Colorado College. Senior John Esposito (undrafted) scored both goals for the Big Red. Lightning prospect Kirill Gotovets is looking to build on the eight points he accumulated last season as a sophomore.

Jimmy Mullin set up teammate Cody Murphy on the power play to give Miami a short-lived 1-0 lead, but the RedHawks gave up two third period goals to lose in Michigan, 4-2. Jets first round defenseman Jacob Trouba had two assists for Michigan. Lightning camper Austin Czarnik had a goal for Miami, his third of the season.

Sixth-ranked Cornell finally got their season underway with an exhibition tie against Brock. Gotovets, now a junior, is looking to build on his sophomore totals of one goal and eight assists last year. Brock University is located in St. Catherines, Ontario.

2012 Lightning prospect camper Austin Czarnik had two goals and an assist for the RedHawks, including the overtime winner. Jimmy Mullin was not listed in the Miami lineup. There was nothing in Miami’s game report from Friday about an injury or suspension.

Freshman Adam Wilcox (pictured, Star-Tribune photo) got the start after serving in a relief role on Friday night and got the win for the top-ranked Gophers over Michigan Tech. It was the Gophers first WCHA win in two tries; they lost 5-3 to the Huskies on Friday. Seth Ambroz (Blue Jackets) had two goals for the Gophers, who outshot Michigan Tech 34-18. The game was tied at two entering the final period.
Canisius Griffins 1 @ No. 12 Western Michigan Broncos 2

The Broncos completed a 2-game sweep of the Griffins with a close win on Saturday night. Broncos captain Luke Witkowski notched his third point in four games. Lightning free agent target Danny DeKeyser had a goal and an assist for WMU. Witkowski and his defensive partner, DeKeyser, both assisted on Trevor Elias’ game winning goal with three minutes left in regulation.

Miami opened their season with a non-conference win over Colgate. Freshman Ryan McKay made 24 saves for the shoutout win. McKay (undrafted) was the goaltending partner of Lightning prospect Adam Wilcox for USHL Green Bay to start last season before Wilcox was moved to Tri-City.

UND got two goals from Panthers prospect Rocco Grimaldi, who like Brendan O’Donnell, missed considerable time last season due to injury.

Freshman Adam Wilcox watched as sophomore Michael Shibrowski got the start for the Gophers. The two are expected to split time during the first few weeks of the season. Nick Bjugstad (Panthers) had a goal and an assist to be named first star for the game.

Freshman Adam Wilcox made his first collegiate start and stopped 10 of 11 shots against the Spartans. Wilcox last played for Tri-City of the USHL. He is expected to share time in the Minnesota nets with Gophers junior Michael Shibrowski (undrafted) to start the year.

Witkowski and the Broncos opened their season at home against St. Lawrence, but were unable to pull out a win, falling in overtime, 4-3. WMU scored twice in the third period to force overtime, including a goal with 31 seconds left in regulation. Junior Jeremy Wick (undrafted) had the game winner for St. Lawrence. It was his fourth career goal.

Quinnipiac Bobcats 2 @ No. 15 Maine Black Bears 1

2011-2012 Season totals: 39 GP, 8-31-39, E, 12 PIM
Quinnipiac started their season off on the right note by going into Maine and defeating the Black Bears, 2-1, in a non-conference match-up. Peca was held off the scoresheet, but is expected to be a big contributor to the Bobcats success this year. Maine outshot QU, 32-18. Bobcats goalie Eric Hartzell (undrafted), a senior, made 31 saves in the win. Quinnipiac plays an exhibition game on Sunday against Acadia. Quinnipiac received the 23rd most votes in the latest USCHO poll.

O’Donnell made his return to the Sioux lineup after missing most of last season with a shoulder injury. He didn’t figure into the scoring in UND’s first exhibition game of the year. They will play another exhibition game next Friday against the USA Under-18 squad. Now a sophomore, O’Donnell had five goals and an assist in 17 games last year before getting hurt.

Freshman Adam Wilcox (pictured) played the second half of Minnesota’s exhibition win over the University of Lethbridge, stopping all seven shots he faced. Wilcox starred for Tri-City in the USHL last year after a trade from Green Bay. Sophomore Michael Shibrowski started the game for the Gophers and made nine saves in 29:30. Christian Isackson (Sabres) had three goals for Minnesota.
Western Ontario Mustangs 2 @ No. 10 Western Michigan Broncos 2 (exhibition)

Broncos co-captain Luke Witkowski went scoreless, but spent six minutes in the penalty box as WMU tied Western Ontario in exhibition play on Saturday. WMU outshot the Mustangs 46-20. Former Lightning fifth round pick (2008) Kyle De Coste now plays for UWO. He had one shot and two penalty minutes in the game. De Coste was never signed by the Lightning. The best junior season he had was a 19-goal effort in 2010-2011 for Sault Ste Marie and Belleville.

ECAC Quarterfinals: Cornell wins best-of-3 series 2-0

Cornell scored three times in the first period and made the score hold up the rest of the way to advance to the ECAC semifinals in Atlantic City.

For the second straight game Harvard and Yale went to overtime, but this time it was the Crimson who prevailed. Alex Killorn had a team-leading nine shots on goal on Saturday after only registering one on Friday night. Defenseman Dan Ford (undrafted) scored the double overtime winner for Harvard – his second goal of the season. The series-deciding Game 3 will be played Sunday at Harvard.

CCHA Quarterfinals: Miami wins best-of-3 series 2-0

Mullin assisted on the game’s first goal and for the second night in a row Miami had a huge second period as they eliminated Michigan State from the CCHA playoff race with a 4-1 victory. The RedHawks scored three times in the second period to blow open a 1-1 game. Miami advances to the ECAC semifinals at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
Note: Brendan O’Donnell (North Dakota) is out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery this week.
