BCHL Interior Conference Semifinals – Game 3

Penticton Vees 1 @ Salmon Arm Silverbacks 2 (OT)
Silverbacks lead Best of 7 series 3-0

C Brendan O’Donnell, PEN: 0-0-0, 4 PIM (roughing, high sticking), *Third Star*
Season totals: 58 GP, 29-43-72, 28 PIM
Playoff totals: 4 GP, 1-3-4, 9 PIM

This is getting ridiculous. Penticton outshot Salmon Arm badly for the third straight game, this time 52-19, but was still set back by undrafted goaltender Kris Moore. The Vees put up 20 shots in both the second and third periods. Moore has been First Star in all three games of the series. Not only was the 20-year-old goaltender undrafted, he is not listed as a commitment to any NCAA school. Game 4 is Saturday on the Silverbacks’ home rink. Though O’Donnell didn’t score, he was named Third Star on the road.

Not long ago TC was battling Spokane for second in the division. Five straight wins over TC later and the Chiefs are 10 points ahead of the Americans. This was Johnson’s “debut” as a Lightning prospect after signing an NHL Entry Level Contract on Monday. He promptly went out and hit 50 goals for the season, which leads the WHL and is 14 more than his previous career high. Johnson (pictured) is within five points of Medicine Hat’s Linden Vey for the league scoring title. This was Ashton’s sixth fight of the year and third against Spokane. It was the first time he fought Mort. Ashton had his five-game point streak come to an end.

RW Brett Connolly, PG: 1-1-2, +1, 0 PIM, *Third Star*
Season totals: 55 GP, 42-24-64, -6, 26 PIM

Season totals: 68 GP, 3-19-22, +34, 133 PIM

Zahn’s high three-game point streak came to an end in an overtime loss to Brandon. It was the second longest streak of his career after a four-game streak he had earlier this season. The Blades have already clinched the league’s top record.

Hutchings took a slashing penalty with under two minutes to go and Florida down 2-1 at the time. Bobby Geopfert was back in goal for Florida after being out for a few weeks due to injury. Geopfert, who is well worth a follow on Twitter @Geffman47, stopped 31 of 33 shots in his return for Third Star. With the win, the Stingrays upped their lead for second place in the South Division to six points over the Everblades.

Season totals: 38 GP, 10-12-22, -10, 29 PIM

The Everblades got some reinforcements with the return of Alex Imbeault and Francis Lemieux back from Connecticut of the AHL. Lemieux is second in the league’s scoring race. Mitch Fadden is tied for 14th despite not playing for the last two months. The two returnees combined for just two assists Sunday, but Florida was able to flirt with 30 shots again. Hutchings extended his season-high point streak to four games with a goal and an assist. The first year pro has battled injuries and inconsistency this season, but has eight points in his last eight games. Florida had a 3-0 lead Sunday before letting the game slip away. With Curtis McElhinney likely being sent to Norfolk from Tampa Bay, Jaroslav Janus should be returning soon to southwest Florida.

A depleted Blades squad was outshot 39-18, including 17-5 in the second period, yet were three minutes away from gaining an overtime point Saturday. Due to injuries and Jaroslav Janus being called up to Norfolk, Florida had to play recently signed Adam Avramenko as their goaltender. Avramenko was just signed out of the SPHL. South Carolina used Shane Owen in net, who started the year with Moncton of the QMJHL and appeared in one game for Florida last month. Alex Hutchings extended his points streak to three games in the loss. The Everblades have taken a significant hit at forward, too, due to call-ups and injuries. Florida is fifth in the Eastern Conference, three points behind South Carolina for fourth and two in front of Wheeling.
