Landry Provides Crunch with Depth on Defense

By Jeremy Houghtaling

Charles Landry provides the Syracuse Crunch with something coach Rob Zettler believes is critical.

The defenseman, who has spent most of the last two seasons in the ECHL, gives the Crunch a dependable option in case of injury. Zettler knows what he can expect, even though Landry has played less than a dozen games in a Syracuse sweater.

"Whenever he's been in there and given the chance to play, he's played well," Zettler said. "He does nothing but be a professional out there."

Florida erased and overcame a one-goal deficit to split this weekend's series with divisional rival Orlando. The Everblades enjoyed a substantial 39-24 shot advantage, aided by eight power play opportunities, although all were fruitless while the game-winner would come during one of the six times the visitors were shorthanded. The lone goal Everblades netminder Jesse Deckert surrendered came with the Solar Bears down a man. Charles Landry joined Danick Gauthier and Kristers Gudlevskis in AHL Syracuse prior to the match, leaving Dan Milan as the only farmhand present with an NHL contract to appear in the match. Carl Nielsen, who has an AHL contract the Lightning's affiliate, was ejected from the game as a result of a kneeing infraction. Florida (7-0-1, 15 PTS) now returns home for some rest and recuperation before taking on visiting Elmira (2-3-0, 6 PTS) on Wednesday.

Orlando erased two deficits to push play into extra time before snapping Florida's season-opening, six-game unbeaten streak in the shootout. The Everblades managed a slight 36-31 edge in shots but were largely stymied by John Curry, netminder for the Solar Bears. Jesse Deckert was solid as well for Florida, turning aside 28 Orlando shots. The Everblades had five opportunities and Orlando six but both teams combined to go 0-for-11 with the man advantage. Danick Gauthier joined Kristers Gudlevskis on recall to AHL Syracuse prior to Friday's match. Charles Landry was back in the lineup while Dan Milan was again scratched. Florida (6-0-1, 13 PTS) and Orlando (3-3-1, 7 PTS) play again Saturday night.

Florida rode a three-goal lead it reestablished midway through the middle period, adding an empty-netter in the final minute to close out Las Vegas and extend its unbeaten streak to six games. With Kristers Gudlevksis still up with AHL Syracuse, the Everblades turned to Jesse Deckert, who stopped 22 of 25 Wranglers shots, to tend net for the fourth-straight game. Danick Gauthier, currently tied for the fourth-highest point total on the team, added a primary helper on a power play tally by Matt Pistilli, the team's and league's current top scorer, in the second period. Charles Landry had the night off while Dan Milan was inserted into the lineup for just the second time this season. Florida (6-0-0, 12 PTS) now heads home to await division rival Orlando (2-3-0, 4 PTS), whom it will square off against on Friday.

For the second time in three nights, Florida took and beat Ontario beyond regulation time, this time after Matthew Pistilli notched his second goal of the match early in overtime to push the visiting squad's season-opening win streak to five games. Sunday's victory came despite the Everblades squandered a three-goal lead it had built up nearly midway through the middle-frame. Jesse Deckert stopped 23 of 27 Reign shots to earn his third-consecutive win in the absence of Kristers Gudlevskis, who remains at present with AHL Syracuse. Fresh off picking up a helper the night before, 6'4", 225 pound Carl Nielsen engaged in his first fight of the season early in the match. Danick Gauthier, who managed to stay out of the sin bin for the first time this season, and Charles Landry barely registered on the stat sheet. Maxime Langelier-Parent was still inactive. Sitting atop the South Division perch, Florida (5-0-0, 10 PTS) finishes its current road trip Wednesday against Las Vegas (2-3-0, 4 PTS).

Florida scored three times on six opportunities with the man-advantage and its penalty-killers negated all seven Bakersfield power plays en route to its fourth-straight victory to open the season. Jesse Deckert, tending the net for the second-straight match with Kristers Gudlevskis recalled to AHL Syracuse, steered aside 26 Condors shots on the evening. Florida finished with a narrow edge in shots, posting 30 of its own. Danick Gauthier, held scoreless while racking up penalty minutes the last two matches after a 1-and-1 opening night performance against Orlando, teed off with a three-point night, notching his 2nd and 3rd goals which accounted for two-thirds of the Everblades' power play production. Charles Landry managed an apple, which made for his first point of the season. Dan Milan made his season debut after sitting out the first three games. Maxime Langelier-Parent, scratched yet again, hasn't appeared since the Everblades' second match. Florida (4-0-0, 8 PTS), which currently sits alone atop the South Division standings, next has a road rematch against Ontario on the docket Sunday afternoon (2-0-1, 5 PTS).

Florida let three different leads, including a two-goal advantage established nearly midway through the middle frame, slip away but earned its third-straight victory to stay unbeaten so far this season after besting host Ontario in the shootout. With Kristers Gudlevskis recalled to AHL Syracuse, last season's surprising late-season signing, Jesse Deckert, got the nod in net and finished with 27 saves on 31 shots. Florida's power play went 1-for-4 on the night while the penalty killers were perfect on the night, squashing for Ontario opportunities with the man-advantage. Danick Gauthier, who was held scoreless for the second-straight game, has already hit double-digits for penalty minutes. Dan Milan, who has yet to hit the ice for the Everblades this season, remains a healthy scratch. Maxime Langelier-Parent was also scratched. Florida (3-0-0, 6 PTS) continues its road swing Saturday night against Bakersfield (0-2-1, 1 PTS).

A four-goal outburst in the 3rd period lifted Florida out of a 2-0 hole and doomed host Orlando on Saturday night. The rally secured back-to-back wins for Kristers Gudlevskis, the Lightning's 2013 5th-rounder, in what was his first set of games as a pro in North America. Dan Gauthier, who had a goal and an assist in the season opener, was held scoreless, as was Charles Landry, who's still looking to register his first point of the season, but both made a dent on the game sheet by finishing a combined +5 with 14 penalty minues as Gauthier and Landry each participated in the only two fights of the contest. The Everblades limited the Solar Bears to just 14 shots on goal and just 6 over the final two periods while posting 29 of their own, with 15 coming during the comeback effort in the final frame. Florida (2-0-0, 4 PTS) will begin its pending four-game road trip on Friday against Ontario (1-0-0, 2 PTS), which has a mid-week tilt with Stockton on the docket.

In his North American pro debut, recent draftee Kristers Gudlevskis steered aside all but one of twenty-one shots he faced in backstopping Florida to a sound decision in its seasons opener at home over divisional rival Orlando. It took a point shot that got through past numbers in the net front to spoil Gudlevskis' shutout bid. Fellow Lightning prospect Danick Gauthier (1 G, 1 A) as well as Maxime Langelier-Parent (1 G) and Carl Nielsen (1 A), both having contracts with and on assignment from AHL Syracuse, chipped in offensively. Florida (1-0-0, 2 PTS) and Orlando (0-1-0, 0 PTS) will square off again Saturday night in Orlando.
