Vasily Koshechkin spelled starter Mikhail Biryukov at 8:11 and was perfect the rest of the way, but Russia still fell 3-2 to Sweden. Ex-Lightning camper Niklas Persson had a pair of helpers in the match for the Swedes.

In the day's other game, ex-Lightning netminder Karri Ramo made 24 stops as the Finns shut out the Czech Republic 5-0.

Vasily Koshechkin finally allowed a goal in the Karjala Cup, but former NHL first rounder Alexander Perezhogin and Denis Grebeshkov each had goals to help lead Russia to a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic. Koshechkin stopped 70 of the 71 shots he faced in the tournament in reasserting his claim to being the best Russian-born goaltender not in the NHL after a disappointing start of the season for Severstal Cherepovets.

Unfortunately for the Russians, Finland defeated Sweden 4-1 with a goal and an assist from ex-Lightning defenseman Janne Niskala to win the tournament of goal differential. The Russians, who were +2 in the tournament, ended up in second behind the Finns at +7, despite the fact the Russians defeated the Finns head-to-head, because the Swedes also finished 2-1-0 in the tournament, with a -1 differential.

Ex-Lightning first rounder Alexander Svitov scored with 2:10 left in regulation and Vasily Koshechkin made 25 saves to lift Russia to a 1-0 win over Finland in Day One of the Karjala Cup. Ex-Lightning goaltender Karri Ramo sat backup in the match for the Finns.

In the tournament's other match, Sweden edged Czech Republic 4-3 on the strength of three third period goals. Recent Lightning camper Niklas Persson had a helper in the match for Sweden.

Koshechkin on Russia's Karjala Cup Roster

Despite a rough start to his season with Severstal Cherepovets of the Russian KHL, Lightning overage prospect Vasily Koshechkin has made the Russian national team for the Karjala Cup leg of the EuroTour tournaments, which is set to begin tomorrow. Koshechkin is the only current Lightning property to make the tournament, which features the best club players in Europe from Sweden, Finland, Russia, and the Czech Republic. Former Lightning properties who will suit up in the tournament include Lukas Krajicek and Marek Kvapil for the Czech Republic, Janne Niskala and Karri Ramo for Finland, Alexander Svitov for Russia, and Niklas Persson for Sweden.
