Lightning Sign DeAngelo to ELC

(Lightning press release)

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenseman Anthony DeAngelo to a three-year, entry level contract, vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman announced today.

DeAngelo, 19, has skated in 22 games this season with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League, recording seven goals and 27 points to go along with 52 penalty minutes. He ranks first for points and is second for assists (20) among all OHL defensemen. The Sewell, New Jersey native also led all OHL defensemen for points (71) and assists (56) last season.

The 5-foot-11, 173-pound defenseman has skated in 203 career OHL games, all with the Sting over four seasons, recording 37 goals and 179 points to go along with 248 penalty minutes. DeAngelo has also appeared in 10 career OHL playoff games, collecting two goals and four points.

DeAngelo was originally selected by the Lightning in the first round, 19th overall, at the 2014 NHL Draft in Philadelphia. DeAngelo was recently named to USA Hockey’s preliminary roster for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team.

BP Commentary: DeAngelo gets a contract just ahead of USA's camp, much the same as Dana Tyrell got his as he was beginning Team Canada's WJC camp in 2008. The big difference, of course, is Tyrell was signed by Brian Lawton, not Yzerman. Stevie-Y has shown a penchant for getting his first rounders under contract early in their post-draft year to take contract worries away from them.

Juniors Game Night: 11-30-14 (Plus WJC Notes)

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 6 @ Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 3

C Cameron Darcy, CB: 0-2-2, -1, 0 PIM, 1 SOG, 8/10 FO, 2 Hits, *Second Star*
Season totals: 19 GP: 1-13-15, -6, 14 PIM
2013-2014 Season: 65 GP, 35-47-82, +3, 51 PIM

Darcy had two assists for the second straight game, but the Eagles were defeated by the Armada despite limiting them to 18 shots. Cape Breton had and lost a 3-1 lead in this one.

Quebec Remparts 2 @ Rimouski Oceanic 3 (OT)

W Adam Erne, QUE: 1-0-1, E, 2 PIM, 3 SOG, 1 Hit
Season totals: 23 GP, 18-21-39, +19, 28 PIM
2013-2014 Season: 48 GP, 21-41-62, -3, 65 PIM

Leafs prospect Frederik Gauthier scored in overtime to give the Oceanic a 3-2 win over rival Quebec. Adam Erne was back on the scoresheet after having his 10-game point streak snapped last game. Erne is almost assuredly on Team USA’s WJC preliminary (and final) roster that comes out Tuesday.

Ontario Hockey League

Kingston Frontenacs 3 @ Sarnia Sting 4

D Anthony DeAngelo, SAR: 1-1-2, +1, 0 PIM, *Third Star*
Season totals: 22 GP, 7-20-27, +1, 52 PIM
2013-14 totals: 51 GP, 15-56-71, -34, 90 PIM

Sarnia won its fifth straight game, 4-3 over the Fronts. DeAngelo continues to produce from the backline; he now leads the OHL in scoring for defensemen. DeAngelo will be watching Team USA’s announcements on Tuesday to see if he made the World Juniors preliminary roster. DeAngelo was not invited to the summer camp because of character concerns.

WJC Notes: Congratulations to Brayden Point, who was named to Team Canada's WJC Development Camp later this month. Point has a good chance at making the team. There is still an outside chance Jonathan Drouin joins him there. Adam Erne is a lock for Team USA and Dominik Masin may captain the Czechs. Anthony DeAngelo is the one to watch.
