Canada Passes on Ashton
Submitted by chad on December 2, 2009 - 12:31Hockey Canada named their World Junior Championships Selection Camp roster today, and like the summer version, there was no Carter Ashton on the list. The Lightning first rounder (2009) was thought to have a shot at being named to the camp after earning a pro contract from Tampa Bay and a spot on Team WHL for the Subway Super Series, as well as producing as a power forward (13-12-25 in 26 games). While his numbers aren't mind blowing, the fact Ashton plays for a last-place club starved for high-end offensive talent makes them seem a more impressive than they appear. Ashton is on pace to obliterate his career highs of 30 goals and 20 assists he set last season.
The last Lightning prospect to play with Team Canada was Dustin Tokarski, who won gold with the Canadians last year. Dana Tyrell was also part of that team, but was injured in exhibition play and missed the tournament.

Lethbridge broke a six-game losing streak while ending Medicine Hat’s streak of seven games without a regulation loss. Ashton will be keeping an eye on Hockey Canada today, as they’re expected to name this year’s WJC selection camp roster at noon (Eastern).
