The Wildcats swept both Games 1 and 2 in Drummondville, and now return home for Game 3 on Tuesday with a comfortable 2-0 lead and home ice advantage. Barberio scored Moncton’s insurance goal on the power play.

Hutchings saw his point streak (going back to the regular season) end at 10 games, but Barrie took the lead in the Eastern Conference Finals, 2-1. Luke Pither (undrafted) scored two goals for the Colts to erase a 1-0 Majors lead and help Barrie to victory. Game 4 is Monday in Mississauga. On the other side, Kitchener defeated Windsor 5-2 in Game 2 to take a 2-0 series lead over the defending Memorial Cup champs.

Diminutive 5’-8” netminder Drew Owsley (undrafted) earned First Star honors for the Americans. Game 3 is Tuesday in Vancouver. On the other side, No.1 Calgary defeated Memorial Cup host Brandon 3-2 to tie their series at one.

The Wildcats struck first in their QMJHL semifinal series, beating the Volts on the road, 5-3. Drummondville had won 17 straight home games. Barberio didn’t score in the game, but reportedly made one of its most important defensive plays when he batted a shot destined for the back of the net out of mid-air as it was crossing the goal line. Game 2 is Sunday night in Drummondville.

The Colts lost their first game of the playoffs after nine contests, falling 5-2 on the road to the Majors. Hutchings extended his point streak to 10 games going back to the regular season. He’s registered a point in all six of his playoff games. He missed four due to an injury. Game 2 is Saturday.

Vancouver stole home ice advantage from the Americans, beating Tri-City in their barn in Game 1, 4-2. Wright was scoreless in the match. The Giants were down 2-1 in the game before mounting a comeback win. Game 2 is Saturday.

Hutchings returned to the Colts lineup after missing the Brampton series with a groin injury. He promptly earned an assist on the game’s opening goal on the power play, giving him a point in each game he’s played this post-season. Going back to the regular season, Hutchings has a nine-game point streak and points in 21 of his last 22 games. Barrie back-up goalie Mavric Parks (undrafted), named after Tom Cruise’s character in Top Gun, picked up his first shutout of the playoffs and First Star honors. He’s filling in for Barrie’s top netminder, Peter Di Salvo, who was knocked out indefinitely with cartilage damage to his knee four games ago. Parks has a sparkling .962 save percentage and 1.25 GAA in four playoff games so far this year. Game 2 is Friday. Kitchener is playing Windsor in the Western Conference finals.

Wright set up the eventual game winning goal by Tomas Vincour (Stars 5/09) on the power play in the second period to help the Giants go 3-0 in Portland and take the Conference Semifinal series 4-2. Wright finished the series with 10 points (six goals) in the six games. Vancouver will now play the West’s top seed, Tri-City, who defeated Chilliwack 4-2 in Round 1 and Kelowna 4-1 in the second round. No.1 Calgary faces Memorial Cup host Brandon in the Eastern Finals.

Draft Watch
Portland winger Nino Niederreiter, a prime candidate for the Lightning to pick at No.6 in this summer’s draft, scored the lone Winterhawk goal in Game 6 and was named Second Star. He finished the playoffs with eight goals and eight assists for 16 points in 13 games. He had 35-24-60 in 65 games in the regular season, and missed time with Portland when he was excelling for Switzerland at the World Junior Championships (7 GP, 6-4-10).
