Harju Named to Team Sweden

According to the IIHF web site, Tampa Bay Lightning forward prospect Johan Harju has been named to the preliminary roster of the Swedish team for the 2009 World Hockey Championships. Harju recently announced that he had signed a contract to play with the Moscow Dynamo of the KHL for the 2009-2010 season, foregoing a possible pro contract with the Lightning. Harju finished the 2008-09 SEL season scoring 27 goals and 22 assists in 55 games for Lulea.

Prospect phenom Victor Hedman, the likely 2009 1st round draft pick by the Lightning, was omitted from the Team Sweden preliminary roster.

If he is so good how could

If Hedman is so good how could Sweden possibly keep him off the team?

18 Years Old

I don't care how good a prospect he is. It's downright abnormal for an 18 year old to make one of the major country's WC roster.

He should easily be just as

He should easily be just as qualified as a 19 year old Stamkos. Unless of course, he isn't as good as previously thought.

You figure Stamkos went from canadian juniors to the NHL as an 18 year old. Hedman has played in one of, if not the best league outside the NHL since he was 16 or 17. Why would he all of a sudden not be good enough for team Sweden?

Not the Same

The difference between 18 and 19 year old players is immense. Why do you think there are so few 17 and 18 year old players on the WJC roster of Canada, for instance?

Hedman not making the World Championships roster for Sweden isn't indicative of anything other than the fact that he's still very young.

I hope you're not going to be the same type who will crucify the kid if he doesn't come out of the womb a pre-packaged 20 minute a night, 40 point type guy right out of the gate as a rookie.

Nah, not that type of guy at

Nah, not that type of guy at all. However, I am also not the type who will make excuses for players just because I really like them or want them on my team.

If Hedman is too young to handle the WC tournament, how could he possibly be expected to come in and compete in the NHL next year? It's not like he has struggled for Modo.
