Vasily Koshechkin spelled starter Mikhail Biryukov at 8:11 and was perfect the rest of the way, but Russia still fell 3-2 to Sweden. Ex-Lightning camper Niklas Persson had a pair of helpers in the match for the Swedes.
In the day's other game, ex-Lightning netminder Karri Ramo made 24 stops as the Finns shut out the Czech Republic 5-0.

Vasily Koshechkin finally allowed a goal in the Karjala Cup, but former NHL first rounder Alexander Perezhogin and Denis Grebeshkov each had goals to help lead Russia to a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic. Koshechkin stopped 70 of the 71 shots he faced in the tournament in reasserting his claim to being the best Russian-born goaltender not in the NHL after a disappointing start of the season for Severstal Cherepovets.
Unfortunately for the Russians, Finland defeated Sweden 4-1 with a goal and an assist from ex-Lightning defenseman Janne Niskala to win the tournament of goal differential. The Russians, who were +2 in the tournament, ended up in second behind the Finns at +7, despite the fact the Russians defeated the Finns head-to-head, because the Swedes also finished 2-1-0 in the tournament, with a -1 differential.
