Cole Caufield (2019 draft eligible), expected to go in the 1st round of the 2019 Entry Draft, scored twice and added an assist as the US NDTP Under-18 squad shocked the top-ranked Huskies Thursday night in exhibition play. John Beecher (2019 draft eligible), also expected to be drafted in the 1st or 2nd round next summer, notched three assists for Team USA as they broke open a 3-3 deadlock at the 2nd intermission by pouring in three 3rd period goals. St. Cloud scored twice in the last minute of the 1st period to overcome an early 2-0 deficit, and then struck first in the 2nd period to take a 3-2 lead well past the game’s midpoint. But Caufield and Beecher led the way for the US U18 team, scoring four of the next five goals to win the game running away. The Huskies got a goal and an assist each from Patrick Newell (undrafted) and Kevin Fitzgerald (undrafted).

This will likely be a game that STC head coach Brett Larson chalks up to knocking the rust off a Huskies team that hasn’t played since December 8th, which perhaps is the reason you schedule an exhibition game after a long layoff. #1 St. Cloud State travels to Pittsburgh next weekend for the Three Rivers Classic where they will take on #14 Union on Friday night, and then play on Saturday night against either Brown or Robert Morris.
