The Yellow Jackets of American International College pulled the proverbial 16th-seed upset of the top-ranked Huskies in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championships on Friday night. Despite outshooting American by a margin of 34-13, St. Cloud fell behind to goals in the first and second periods by Joel Kocur (undrafted) and Brennan Kapchek (undrafted). Easton Brodzinski scored a power-play marker for the Huskies in the 3rd to pull the tourney favorites to within one, but St. Cloud could never muster the equalizer. Yellow Jacket netminder Zackarias Skog (undrafted) made 33 saves, including 27 over the 2nd and 3rd periods, to preserve the upset and advance his team to the West Regional finals on Saturday night. For the Huskies, their 2018-19 season ends with a spectacular record of 30-6-3 along with Bolt prospect Nick Perbix who had an equally stellar freshman campaign.

Fellow Lighting prospect Cole Guttman and the David Carle led Denver Pioneers shutout the Ohio State Buckeyes in the other West Regional Semifinal Friday night. Denver netminder and Red Wings prospect Filip Larsson (DET, 2016 6th round pick) saved all 24 shots, leading his team to West Regional Finals against American International on Saturday night. Les Lancaster (undrafted) and Colin Staub (undrafted) scored for the Pioneers.
