Prospect of the Week (2.6.12)

This season Bolt Prospects introduced our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their on-ice contributions. There are no trophies or plaques, because the fame that comes with this award is too big for a mantle or wall.

We just wanted to highlight prospects throughout the year to help fans get better acquainted with the next round of Lightning stars while recognizing the prospect’s achievement on the ice.

This week’s BP Prospect of the Week award goes to … Alex Killorn (Harvard, NCAA).

Yes, again. He’s good.

Killorn was a co-winner last week with Tri-City (USHL) goaltender Adam Wilcox, but this past week – a rather slow week in prospect land – he earned the award again.

The Harvard senior only played one game this week, but he had three points. Anyone averaging three points per game for the week gets serious consideration. Killorn’s three-assist game came Friday night against fellow Lightning prospect Matt Peca and Quinnipiac University. Harvard won the game 6-3 after trailing 3-1. Peca had two assists for the Bobcats.

Killorn also scored in Monday’s Beanpot semi-final game, which Harvard lost to Boston University, 3-1. So he’s the early leader for next week’s award, too.

He will likely join the Norfolk Admirals – pending an NHL or AHL contract – at the conclusion of Harvard’s season. It’s been more than four years since the Lightning drafted Killorn in the third round and he’s worth the wait. He will join prospect forwards such as Cory Conacher, Brett Connolly, Carter Ashton, and maybe Richard Panik next year battling for a limited number of spots on the Lightning’s roster. Early odds are on Killorn starting in the AHL since Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman likes to take a slow approach to prospect development.
