Prospect of the Week (3.13.12)

This season Bolt Prospects introduced our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their on-ice contributions. There are no trophies or plaques, but it’s possible a street may be named after him – at least in SimCity.

We wanted to highlight prospects throughout the year to help fans get better acquainted with the next round of Lightning stars while recognizing the prospect’s achievement on the ice.

This week’s BP Prospect of the Week award goes to … Tyler Johnson, C, Norfolk Admirals (AHL).

The Norfolk Admirals have won 15 straight games thanks to solid goaltending, great defense, and Tyler Johnson scoring a billion points.

Johnson, a first year pro who was signed as a free agent out of Spokane of the WHL last March 7, has points in 12 of his last 14 games. He has 24 points in those 14 games. Johnson is currently on a seven-game point streak in which he has 15 points (six goals).

Last week, Johnson celebrated his contract anniversary with four goals and four assists for eight points as Norfolk swept its three-game road weekend.

The team is two wins shy of the AHL record for most consecutive wins.

Johnson has 24 goals and 28 assists for 52 points in 62 games for Norfolk this season, ranking third among all AHL rookies in scoring. He projects as a two-way center at the NHL level with above average sniping skills.

Johnson is used to winning things. He won the Memorial Cup with Dustin Tokarski for Johnson’s hometown of Spokane in 2008. He won a gold medal with the United States at the 2010 World Junior Championships.

Johnson also won the AHL Player of the Week this past week and will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Admirals home game. Maybe he can take the award and put it on his mantle in his new house on Tyler Johnson Boulevard.
