Prospect of the Week (4.4.12)

This season Bolt Prospects introduced our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their on-ice contributions. There are no trophies or plaques, but a song remake may be in the works.

We wanted to highlight prospects throughout the year to help fans get better acquainted with the next round of Lightning stars while recognizing the prospect’s achievement on the ice.

This week’s BP Prospect of the Week award goes to … Tyler Johnson, Norfolk Admirals (AHL).

AHL rookie Tyler Johnson didn’t have an especially fantastic week on the ice last week – he had one assist in two Norfolk wins – but that point was his 22nd of the month of March. The former Spokane Chief, who was signed as a free agent by the Lightning last March, averaged just short of two points per game this month, finishing with those 22 points in 12 games. He scored in nine straight games and finished a 13-game point streak on March 30. He has helped the Ads to 23 straight wins, a hockey universe record.

He was also awarded the AHL Player of the Month, making this his second-straight March to remember.

Perhaps the month of March should be named after him. If that’s too preposterous, then go the simple route and have Eldra Patrick “El” Debarge, remake his hit 80’s song and call it “Who’s T-Johnny?” after Johnson’s Twitter handle. We don’t think that’s too much to ask. “She” is certainly capable of saying “Who’s T-Johnny?” before smiling in her special way.

At any rate, with 29 goals and 64 points in 70 games this year Johnson sits in sixth in the AHL in points and second among rookies behind teammate and fellow Lightning prospect Cory Conacher (34-39-73). Johnson is also tied for sixth in goals, though just 10 of his 29 have come on the power play.

Congratulations to Tyler Johnson for winning our Prospect of the Week and the AHL Player of the Month awards, and to Eldra for having those narcotics charges dropped.

With the signing of JT Brown and the emergence of JT Wyman, we're looking forward to a future JT-TJ-JT line in Tampa.
