Smaby Unsure of Future

Fresh off a disappointing Frozen Four National Semi-Final loss to Boston College, University of North Dakota captain and defenseman Matt Smaby is unsure if he'll be back with the Sioux next year, or choose to sign with the Lightning. Smaby told the Grand Forks Herald that he hasn't thought through the decision just yet. "My thoughts have been focused on other things," said Smaby, who was voted team captain before the season. Smaby and Buffalo draft pick and fellow junior Drew Stafford are drawing the most interest from Sioux fans already saying "Wait 'til next year."

Game Night 4/6: Thrashers at Lightning

The Lightning had an opportunity to put the stake completely through the Thrashers' heart tonight. They only managed to drive the stake halfway through. ATL-2 TB-3 (SO) It was Sean Burke versus Mike Dunham in a matchup of the two slowest goaltenders in the league. Burke stopped 29 of 31 before stopping 2 of 3 in penalty shots. This I know for certain: Brad Richards is money in shootouts. Ryan Craig scored the 15th goal of his rookie season on the power play. Pavel Kubina's return tonight pushes Timo Helbling out of the lineup. Paul Ranger played 18:41 with 1 shot and 4 blocked shots. Craig was -1 in 15:37 with 4 shots and 1 block. Evgeny Artyukhin played 5:19 with 1 hit. Game sheet from NHL.com.

Will the Lightning Attempt to Sign Smaby for the Playoffs?

Here's an interesting question for you Bolt Prospecteers to try and answer that was asked to me by our web guru Tim: North Dakota's season, one way or another, will be over by late Saturday night. Hopefully, on that night, Smaby and his Fighting Sioux will be playing in the national championship game against the winner of Wisconsin and Maine. When it's over, will the Lightning attempt to sign Smaby as their #7 or #8 defenseman going into the playoffs? Considering the meager ice time Timo Helbling and Doug O'Brien have gotten with the Lightning's recent injuries, I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

Program Note: UND vs. BC Tomorrow (4/6)

My Tivo is set, is yours? The NCAA Semifinal game between North Dakota and Boston College will be aired on ESPN2 at 3pm. Right winger Stanislav Lascek had a fantastic season this year for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens by all accounts. In 64 games he had 47 goals, 88 assists, and 135 points, which was good enough for first on his team and second overall in the league to Quebec Remparts right winger Alexander Radulov (Nashville pick). Tonight, the QMJHL presented their 2005-06 season awards and named their First and Second Team all-stars. Radulov, who was also named QMJHL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year, was named to the First Team on one wing, while Lascek's teammate and "Traverse City Lightning" member Maxime Boisclair was named to the other wing spot. Boisclair played 6 more games than Lascek and had 5 less points, but led the league with 70 goals.
