The St. Pete Times is reporting that forward Nick Tarnasky has been traded to the Nashville Predators for a 2009 conditional pick. The 6th round pick acquired from Nashville will turn into a 5th round pick if Tarnasky plays 50 games for the Predators next season.
Tarnasky, a 9th round pick (#287 overall) of the 2003 entry draft defied the odds and earned a regular NHL roster spot during the 2006-07 season as an energy line forward for then head coach John Tortorella and GM Jay Feaster. Feaster rewarded Tarnasky with a 3 year contract on June 11, 2007. Tarnasky amassed 11 goals, 9 assists, and 162 penalty minutes in 160 games for the Bolts.
The Norfolk Admirals have announced eight players have been cut from their training camp roster. In this first round of cuts, no Tampa prospects were released. The camp roster now counts 29 players remaining, including the still unsigned Tampa prospect forward Mitch Fadden.
Four of the eight players cut were reassigned to Tampa's ECHL affiliate in Augusta including forwards Matt Auffrey, Michael Field, Sean E. O'Connor, and Jamie Thompson. Defenseman Jason Beckett and goaltender Nick Boucher were returned to the Fort Wayne Komets of the IHL, while defenseman Chris Kaufman and forward Sean D. O'Connor were returned to their respective ECHL teams in Bakersfield and Phoenix.
Quebec's RDS is reporting that the Tampa Bay Lightning have waived forward Michel Ouellet. The Lightning are attempting to trim their roster down to 24 by 3pm Oct 3rd, ahead of their season opener against the New York Rangers on Oct 4th in Prague.
Ouellet, signed to a two-year contract by then GM Jay Feaster on July 1, 2007 as a free agent from the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been victimized by a rash of forward signings this summer by the Lightning's new ownership group. Ouellet's contract pays him $1.3M this year, but he is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Despite some concern of whether forwards Brandon Bochenski and Zenon Konopka would clear waivers, both forwards passed through unclaimed at noon on Monday and have been reassigned to the Norfolk Admirals. Bochenski and Konopka was cut from the Tampa Bay training camp on Thursday night just prior to the team leaving for its European season opener against the New York Rangers next weekend in Prague. Both had to wait until Saturday's beginning of the 2008-09 NHL waiver season. The two are expected to be two-thirds of the Admirals top line to start the 2008-09 season, with head coach Darren Rumble on record as saying that Konopka would serve as the team's captain if not claimed.
Preseason action continues for the 0-2-0-0 Admirals this Friday and Saturday when the Philadelphia Phantoms play back-to-back games at the Scope in Norfolk.
Weekend game results for Lightning prospects playing in the BCHL, QMJHL, OHL, and WHL. Season stat update included.
