Like a great prize fighter, the Lightning continue to summon up the will to fight past any adversity.

    NJ-1
    TB-3

Marc Denis made 34 stops for the win. Martin St. Louis broke his goal scoring slump with a pair of talleys with the other Lightning goal going to the suddenly hot Jason Ward. Brad Richards, Nolan Pratt, Eric Perrin, Vincent Lecavalier and Cory Sarich all had assists.

The win coupled with Atlanta's loss to San Jose moves the Lightning back to within 2 points of first place in the division. And, with one head-to-head matchup on the schedule, the team's division title destiny is back within its hands. Huge win tonight.

And the season continues to grind down to the bitter end.

    SPR-2
    HER-4

Jonathan Boutin allowed 4 goals on 35 shots in the loss. Justin Keller and Kyle Wanvig had the Falcons' goals with assists to Adam Henrich, Norm Milley and Eric Healey.

Interesting note for those looking for silver linings: Keller's goal totals pro-rate to about 20 goals for a full season had he not missed so much time with the injury he had in December. That's not a bad rookie campaign, especially for a player who is so undersized. That's something to build on, which is critical. Aside from Chris Lawrence, there's not much scoring help coming through the pipeline with the possible exception of the X factor that is the Kazionovs. So, whatever solutions to the minor league offensive woes there can be for next season have to come from within and have to come from the young forwards already under contract stepping up.

    First Period
HER Werner, (1) (Laing, Arsene), 4:10
SPR Keller, (12) (Henrich, Milley), 8:41 (PP)

    Second Period
HER Tenute, (22) (Wilson, Klepis), 6:37
    HER Miles, (1) (Hedlund), 11:40

    Third Period
    SPR Wanvig, (14) (Healey), 3:54
HER Bourque, (20) (Steckel, Laing), 15:46

Johnstown shows a flicker of hope.

    JHN-4
    TRE-3

Morgan Cey stopped 34 of 37 shots faced for the win. Gus Katsuras led the way offensively with 1 goal and 2 assists while fellow rookie Maxime Boisclair had 1 goal and 1 assist. Dimitri Tarabrin and Zbynek Hrdel had the other Johnstown goals with Doug Andress, Jean Desrochers and Andrew Martens adding individual helpers.

The win moves Johnstown six points behind Reading for the final North Division playoff spot with three games in hand. And, with Radek Smolenak and PJ Atherton back in the fold, maybe the Chiefs aren't quite ready to die just yet. Every game is a must win from here on out.

    JHN Boisclair, (15) (Katsuras), 12:02

    Second Period

By all appearances, Johnstown is done.

    TRE-5
    JHN-2

Morgan Cey allowed 5 goals on 26 shots in the loss. Gus Katsuras and newcomer Rob Lehtinen had the Chiefs goals with individual assists belonging to Zbynek Hrdel, Maxime Boisclair, Jean Desrochers and Dimitri Tarabrin.

Johnstown now finds themselves 8 points behind 5th place Reading for the final playoff spot in the ECHL North Division and while the Chiefs still hold games in hand that could get them back in the hunt, the sad truth is that with Randy Rowe injured and Stanislav Lascek, Radek Smolenak and PJ Atherton up in Springfield, this Johnstown team is running on fumes and looks like it is going to limp to the finish line of the season. Obviously for the Lightning it is going to be a long offseason as they ponder why a season that started with so much promise for their minor league system went so wrong.

    First Period
    TREN Bertoli, (21) (Riddle), 14:55
TREN Mondou, (18) (Tremblay, Haggett), 16:48 (PP)
    TREN Riddle, (25) (Bertoli), 17:32

    Second Period
    TREN Pandolfo, (17) , 8:44
JHN Katsuras, (6) (Hrdel, Boisclair), 14:50

    Third Period
    TREN Tremblay, (4) (Bertoli), 16:26
JHN Lehtinen, (1) (Desrochers, Tarabrin), 18:57

And, just like that, the Lightning no longer control their division title destiny.

    TB-1
    WSH-7

Johan Holmqvist allowed 4 goals on 24 shots for the loss while Marc Denis allowed 3 goals on 5 shots in relief. Filip Kuba had the only Lightning goal off assists from Doug Janik and Nick Tarnasky. The Lightning now trail Atlanta by six points in the division with a game in hand after the Thrashers' overtime win against Buffalo today. Just 4 points separate 6th place Tampa Bay and the 9th place New York Islanders now, putting the Lightning in the uncomfortable position of not only seeing their division title hopes slip away, but also seeing that making the playoffs may become a difficult task as well.

Bad, bad, bad time of year for a three game losing streak.

    First Period
Washington 5:31, Tomas Fleischmann 3 (Boyd Gordon)
Washington 13:38, Tomas Fleischmann 4 (Kris Beech, Milan Jurcina)

    Second Period
Washington 1:14, Alexander Semin 35 (power play) (Chris Clark, Brian Pothier)
Washington 6:45, Alexander Semin 36 (Tomas Fleischmann)
Washington 8:18, Alexander Semin 37 (Kris Beech, Matt Bradley)
Tampa Bay 17:44, Filip Kuba 11 (Doug Janik, Nick Tarnasky)

    Third Period
Washington 10:34, Alexandre Giroux 2 (unassisted)
Washington 17:55, Boyd Gordon 5 (Tomas Fleischmann, Shaone Morrisonn)

With the weight of the affiliation dissolving seemingly lifted off their shoulders, Springfield responds.

    HFD-2
    SPR-5

Jonathan Boutin stopped 29 of 31 shots faced for the win. Veteran Eric Healey led the way with 2 goals and 1 assist while new Falcon Joe Rullier had a trifecta of assists. David Spina added 2 goals and the Falcons' other newcomer, Nick Kuiper, had two helpers. Stephen Baby had the other Falcons goal and Justin Keller, Dan Cavanaugh and Norm Milley had individual assists. ATO player Dusty Collins was -1 with 2 shots on goal in his professional debut.

Kyle Wanvig and Ryan Munce were not available for the game due to travel problems presumably because of the snowstorm that has enveloped the Northeast. Karri Ramo was not listed as a healthy scratch in Springfield's game recap, for those who need fuel for the speculation he has been recalled.

    First Period
SPR Healey, (25) (Keller, Milley), 11:04
