It took overtime, but the Syracuse Crunch emerged with a win in a special teams battle.

The Crunch struggled to produce on the power play, but netted two shorthanded markers 26 seconds apart in the first period. Yanni Gourde provided the game-winner in the extra session, as Syracuse topped the Hershey Bears, 3-2, at the Onondaga County War Memorial Wednesday.

“It was a good effort and a good hockey game tonight,” said Crunch head coach Benoit Groulx, who clinched the North Division coaching job in the AHL’s All-Star Classic. “I thought it was a very entertaining game, not only for us — both teams — but for our fans. I thought we executed well tonight, and made some good plays offensively and defensively. We’re playing up to our identity. We played fast and didn’t give them much. Our goalie was solid. It was a nice win.”

    Wall-cox rises up.

    HER-2
    SYR-3 (OT)

Adam Wilcox allowed 2 goals on 19 shots for the win. That's still not a warm and fuzzy stat line in terms of save percentage, but Wilcox has needed a performance like this since getting the #1 job in full with Gudlevskis being recalled. He made a lot of key situational saves tonight to make a victory possible.

    First Period
    16:17 SYR Brodeur (1), (Condra, Conacher)(SH)
    16:43 SYR Gourde (9), (unassisted)(SH)
18:47 HER Mitchell (4), (Lewington, Stephenson)

    1:20 HER Thomas (14), (Djoos, Bourque)(PP)

    Third Period

    Overtime
3:01 SYR Gourde (10), (Witkowski, Taormina)

Yanni Gourde and Erik Condra were the game's first and second stars. Luke Witkowski was hosed given that feathery soft give-and-go he worked to make Gourde's game winner happen.

Syracuse, at least in terms of overall balance of play, seemed to be in a more dominant position tonight with the return of a lot of key regulars like Conacher, Condra, and Richard from Tampa Bay now that they've had some time to get re-acclimated. The win moves Syracuse out to a 2 point lead in the North Division, and just as importantly this was a quality victory against a good Hershey team from the other side of the conference where the teams seem a little stronger, on paper, so far this year.

Dominik Masin scored his first pro goal in the match. Other than that, it was a clunker.

Adam Erne had a hand in every Syracuse goal, but the Crunch came up short.

The Syracuse forward netted a pair of goals and assists for his first four-point night as a pro, but the depleted Crunch fell to the Hartford Wolf Pack, 5-4, at the Onondaga County War Memorial Wednesday.

Three of the Crunch’s six leading scorers are on recall to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“Obviously, we want to win hockey games regardless of the lineup,” Erne said. “I don’t think that’s really an excuse for us. I think we need to find a way to win these games.”

Frantic Syracuse comeback falls just short.

    HFD-5
    SYR-4

Adam Wilcox allowed 5 goals on 24 shots for the loss. With Ben Bishop potentially injured for the long term and Gudlevskis up in Tampa Bay, Syracuse's crease belongs to Wilcox now. We'll see how he handles the challenge.

    First Period
    16:08 SYR Erne (7), (Peca)
19:42 HFD Graves (4), (Joly, Jensen)

    Second Period
    2:58 HFD Tambellini (5), (Fontaine, Kampfer)(PP)
6:21 HFD Bodie (6), (Oksanen, McPherson)
    7:48 SYR Hart (3), (Erne)
17:28 HFD Oksanen (2), (Bodie, McRae)

    Third Period
    1:01 SYR Erne (8), (Taormina)
    2:11 HFD Fontaine (4), (Nieves)
4:00 SYR Walcott (1), (Gourde, Erne)

Adam Erne and Brian Hart were the game's first and third stars. Erne's 4 point night moves him to 5 goals and 10 points in 9 games in the month of December. An afterthought for much of the past few seasons, the former 2nd round pick Hart now has 3 goals and 4 points in the past 5 games. Two young power forwards starting to make a little progress, at least on the scoresheet, is a positive thing.

Syracuse's North Division lead has now shrunk to 2 points, although the Crunch still hold a couple of games in hand on Albany.

    Saturday night's alright for fighting.

    SYR-5
    BRI-3

Kristers Gudlevskis allowed 1 goal on 13 shots before getting booted from the contest for fighting. Adam Wilcox allowed 2 goals on 10 shots the rest of the way in cleanup duty to claim the rare bird that is the backdoor win.

    First Period
    14:01 SYR Hart (2), (Thomas, Peca)(PP)
14:47 SYR Gourde (8), (Brodeur, Bournival)

19:56 SYR Halmo (7), (Taormina, Gourde)

    Third Period
    5:53 SYR Comrie (2), (Taormina, Peca)(PP)

Matt Taormina and Matthew Peca were the game's first and second stars.

Syracuse scorched their way to a 3-0 lead in the First Period and looked completely in control until 9:25 of the Second Period when Stephen Gionta scored Bridgeport's first goal and the following insanity broke loose:

    Quote:
09:24 SYR Jake Dotchin, Fighting, 5 min

And a good time was had by all. Syracuse blew the 3 goal lead but were able to eventually regain the winning edge with a late Second Period marker by Halmo.

Syracuse is now 4 points clear of the rest of the North Division in first place and 6 points back of the conference lead with games in hand.

Tanner Richard moved left and right as he slowly approached the net, and then quickly flicked a backhander that beat Michael Garteig’s glove.

The goal — followed by a save by Kristers Gudlevskis at the other end — sealed a 4-3 shootout win for the Syracuse Crunch over the Utica Comets at the Onondaga County War Memorial Saturday. The Crunch captured all six points on the three-game homestand, including two wins against divisional opponents.

“It’s a very good week for us, obviously,” Crunch head coach Benoit Groulx said. “Tonight we battled hard. It was our fifth game in eight days with some previous travel in St. John’s, so we had to battle hard last night and battle hard again against a very competitive Utica team. My hat’s off to our players.”
