The Syracuse Crunch’s power play adjustments paid off.

The Crunch scored three times with the man-advantage against the IceCaps, as Syracuse topped St. John’s, 4-2, at the Onondaga County War Memorial Wednesday.

For Crunch head coach Benoit Groulx, the key was putting Matt Taormina and Cory Conacher together to form a clear cut top power play unit.

“Tonight was a five-player effort, but we decided to put Taormina and Conacher together on the power play,” Groulx said. “They hadn’t played together in quite a bit, because we were trying many different things. I thought the two of them were very good on the power play — like (Matthew) Peca, like (Tye) McGinn, like (Erik) Condra.”

Deduct the garbage time foolishness at the end of the contest and it's a 4-2 game, which looks less bad but is still not entirely inspiring.

Syracuse had an emphatic answer to Binghamton’s game-tying goal early in the third period.

The Crunch surged to score three goals in a span of 2:06 and continued to push the Senators to the final horn, as Syracuse beat Binghamton, 4-1, at the Onondaga County War Memorial Saturday.

“We got scored on — a missed assignment — but we bounced back right away,” Crunch head coach Benoit Groulx said. “I thought we played a strong game tonight. We didn’t give them much. Kristers (Gudlevskis) was very solid when needed. Our (penalty kill) was strong. I thought tonight we were a structured team and we worked hard, and it showed.”

It took 584 games, but Erik Condra accomplished a feat he narrowly missed eight times before.

The veteran forward recorded his first professional hat trick and the Crunch were able to hang on, as Syracuse topped the Rochester Americans, 4-3, at the Onondaga County War Memorial Saturday.

“It was a little surreal,” Condra said with a smile about his third goal. “I had to think about it for a second to make sure I had the hat trick. I was pretty excited about it. A great play by (Yanni) Gourde in the middle there. He’s a great player who made another great play. I just hammered it home.”

Usher Condra lets it burn in Crunch victory.

    RCH-3
    SYR-4

Adam Wilcox allowed 3 goals on 30 shots for the victory. After going into the Third Period with the all important 3 goal lead, Wilcox did eventually surrender a couple of goals including the false hope goal early in the final frame. But, he was able to hold the fort the rest of the way to get the W.

    First Period
0:46 SYR Condra (8), (Peca, Brodeur)
    7:23 SYR Gourde (20), (Halmo, Vermin)(PP)
12:00 SYR Condra (9), (Walcott, Taormina)

    Second Period
    11:03 RCH Nylander (7), (Grant, Kennedy)(PP)
15:59 SYR Condra (10), (Gourde, Thomas)

    Third Period
2:25 RCH Bonis (6), (Cornel, Catenacci)
4:17 RCH Baptiste (20), (Kennedy, Catenacci)

Erik Condra and Yanni Gourde were the game's first and second stars. Condra had the home crowd screaming "yeah!" with his first pro hat trick while Gourde hit 20 goals for the second time as an AHL'er. Matthew Peca, somewhat quietly, has 1 goal and 7 points in his last 8 contests.

Syracuse pulls 2 points clear of Albany and 4 points clear of Toronto with the victory, and with both of those teams dropping their games in regulation tonight, the Crunch retained all their games in hand. Beautiful.

Cory Conacher was the game's second star.

What a tough pill to swallow. The Crunch played an excellent road game to build the 2 goal Third Period lead and had a 30-23 shot advantage on the game. They got everything but the final result.

Syracuse moves into a tie with Albany at 62 points atop the North Division with 2 games in hand. However, Toronto lurks just 2 points back with the Crunch holding 1 game in hand on the Marlies.

Adam Erne and Yanni Gourde were the game's second and third stars. In 5 games since returning from injury, Erne has 5 goals and 7 points. He's making a play to get another callup to Tampa Bay before the end of the year.

A wise old hockey man once told me how incredibly difficult it is to beat a team on back-to-back days if you humiliate them in the first game. Pride kicks in. That's about what happened today.

Syracuse moved 1 point back of Albany for the top spot in the North Division with 2 games in hand on the Devils.
