    HockeyAllsvenskan (Sweden)
    Vasteras 5 vs. Karlskoga 1

    Brendan Mikkelson, Vasteras, 0-1-1, +1, 2 SOG, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 5 GP, 0-1-1, E, 4 PIM

Patrik Berglund and Matt Fornataro scored less than a minute apart near the middle of the second period to break up a one-all tie and help push Vasteras, now 4-1 with Brendan Mikkelson in the lineup, to victory Saturday night that put the home club within reach of first place. Mikkelson registered his first point of the season with a primary assist on Mikael Backlund's third period goal. On the play, Mikkelson sidestepped a fore-checker at the top of the left circle while looking to escape his own zone and then, after slipping into the neutral zone, fed a cross-ice pass slightly slightly behind a hard-charging Backlund who tapped the puck between his legs from behind in stride before firing a heavy wrister as he slowed up near the right hash that beat Karlskoga netminder Joel Gistedt. Berglund scored another goal, a short-handed empty-netter, during garbage time after Karlskoga, in a last act of desperation, pulled Gistedt despite being behind by three goals. Vasteras' Lars Johansson was a rock in net, stopping 37 of 38 shots to earn his 14th win. Vasteras (13-7-2-0, 43 PTS) will be tested again on Tuesday when they take on Leksands (13-3-1-4, 45 PTS), the league's other co-leader.

    Elitserien (Sweden)
Brynas 5 vs. MODO 6 (OT)

    Johan Harju, Brynas, 1-0-1, +4, 3 SOG, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 23 GP, 8-4-12, +3, 29 PIM

Brynas earned a point but squandered three separate leads, twice after being up by two goals, en route to its fifth-straight loss at home. David Gunnarsson scored for MODO just 19 seconds after Calle Jarnkrok put Brynas ahead with just under seven minutes to play in regulation and Richie Regehr finished MODO's comeback with less than a minute remaining in the overtime session by striking on the power play. MODO won the special teams battle, scoring two timely goals with the man-advantage in three opportunities while Brynas failed to solve the MODO penalty-kill four different times. Daniel Widing had hat trick in what amounted to a whale of a game (4 PTS, +3, 6 SOG) for Brynas' right-winger. Harju, who helped pad the home club's initial lead in the first period after getting behind the opposing defenders and gathering a stretch pass that sent him in alone on MODO netminder Bernhard Starkbaum, was one of the even-strength stalwarts tonight and shared the night's best +/- rating with teammate Sebastian Enterfeldt, who assisted on three Brynas goals. Up next for Brynas (9-7-3-4, 37 PTS) is a tilt against slumping AIK (6-12-1-4, 24 PTS), which has had its own troubles closing out games and has a league-high four losses in overtime, on Tuesday.

    Vasteras 1 vs. Malmo 4

    Brendan Mikkelson, Vasteras, 0-0-0, E, 2 SOG, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 4 GP, 0-0-0, -1, 4 PIM

Vasteras lost for the first time with Brendan Mikkelson in the lineup, the productive duo of locked-out NHLers Patrik Berglund and Mikael Backlund were held scoreless and Lars Johansson could only stop 12 of 15 shots on a night the old joke about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory seems particularly poignant. At the end of the first, Vasteras held a 14 to 1 advantage in shots, had been on the power play three times and had yet to go down a man. Vasteras continued to dictate play in the second, putting up another 13 shots and taking three more cracks at the man advantage, but wound up heading into the third trailing by two. Vasteras finally solved Malmo's netminder Pontus Sjogren just after the start of the third period when Tim Heed buried a feed from Matt Fornataro, formerly of the Lightning farm system and the player who was sent to Chicago in exchange for Brandon Segal last season, Vasteras would not get the score any closer despite yet another three power play chances in the final frame. Mattias Persson scored twice for Malmo. Vasteras (12-7-2-0, 40 PTS) now regroups to continue the current home stand against fellow league powerhouse Karlskoga (15-6-0-0, 45 PTS) on Saturday.
