Gatineau scored twice in 1:20 early in the third period to break a 2-2 tie, then added an empty net goal with three seconds left to win Game 7 vs. Quebec and advance to the QMJHL Finals. The Olympiques completed an improbable, but not impossible comeback from down 3-1 in the series over the higher seeded Remparts. Lightning prospect Adam Janosik was scoreless for Gatineau, but was plus-2 for the night and was on the ice for the game winning goal. Gatineau now gets the privilege of facing one of the CHL’s powerhouses, St. John, for the championship and right to go to the Memorial Cup. That series will begin Thursday in New Brunswick.

    Western Conference Finals

    No.1 Portland Winterhawks 6 @ No.2 Spokane Chiefs 3
Portland wins best of seven series 4-2

    C Tyler Johnson, SPO: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
    Season Totals: 71 GP, 53-62-115, +27, 48 PIM
    Playoff Totals: 14 GP, 7-7-14, +3, 9 PIM

Spokane certainly had their leads and chances in this series, but it’s the Portland Winterhawks who are moving on to the WHL Finals. Monday night in Washington the Chiefs scored first again, and had a 2-0 lead 3:32 into the game but Portland scored the game’s next three goals and finished it with three more in the third period to win handily. Lightning prospect Tyler Johnson was scoreless in the final game of his junior career. To say the overager had an outstanding year would be an understatement, as he led the WHL in goals scored, was second in points, and was the Western Conference Player of the Year. He earned an entry level contract from Tampa Bay in the process. His playoffs were mired by a head injury and suspension, but he still finished at a point-per-game. Johnson will no doubt be in Tampa Bay’s prospect camp(s) the next time we see him and he’s likely to begin next year with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL.

Owen Sound got three assists from Geoffrey Schemitsch and three goals from Matt Petgrave (2011) to crush Windsor 10-4 and win the Wayne Gretzky Trophy as Western Conference champions. That title earns the Attack not only a match-up with Bobby Orr Trophy champion Mississauga for the OHL championship, but because the Majors are Memorial Cup hosts and have an automatic bid to that tournament, Owen Sound earns an invitation too as – at minimum – the OHL’s second best team. In Game 5 with Windsor the Spits had 1-0 and 2-1 leads and the game was just 4-2 Attack entering the third period. Owen Sound got two quick goals in the third and then added four more, including three power play goals. Two of Schemitsch’s assists were with the man advantage. Jack Campbell let in all 10 goals for Windsor.

Reigning CHL Goaltender of the Week Mac Carruth (Blackhawks) was strong between the pipes for Portland. Game 4 is Friday in Spokane. After defeating the top-seeded Winterhawks 2-1 in Game 1, Spokane was looking to take a stranglehold on the series Sunday and took a 1-0 lead late in the first period, but Portland replied less than 30 seconds later to tie the game and eventually win it on a second period power play goal. Ryan Johansen (Blue Jackets) scored the winner for Portland. Lightning prospect Tyler Johnson was scoreless in his return to the Chiefs lineup. He was suspended for Game 1 for a kneeing major taken in the last game of the Tri-City series. USHL Western Conference Semifinals

    No.1 Dubuque Fighting Saints 3 @ No.4 Fargo Force 0
Dubuque wins best of five series 3-0

    C Jimmy Mullin, FGO: 0-0-0, -1, 0 PIM, 1 SOG
    Season Totals: 52 GP, 23-37-60, +29, 26 PIM
    Playoff Totals: 5 GP, 0-0-0, -1, 0 PIM

And that’s that. Dubuque scored twice in the first period while outshooting the Force 13-5, then withstood a 14-1 shot onslaught in the third period to defeat Fargo 3-0 and advance to the conference finals. Lightning prospect Jimmy Mullin, who led the team in scoring during the regular season, was shut out of both this series and the qualifying round. That said, he had a great first (and only) season in the USHL and will take his talents to the Miami Redhawks of the NCAA next season.

Results from the QMJHL and OHL after the flip.
