The Lightning passed on Grigorenko at the June draft. The Sabres took him two picks after the Lightning’s selection of of a much-needed defensive prospect, Slater Koekkoek, at 10th overall. Season totals: 3 GP, 0-1-1, -1, 2 PIM

Patrik Machac (undrafted) scored in the first period and Brampton goalie Matej Machovsky (undrafted) made it stand up with 21 saves to lead Brampton to a 1-0 home win over Belleville. Lightning prospect Dylan Blujus was scoreless for the second straight game.

    Ontario Hockey League

Owen Sound Attack 3 @ Barrie Colts 4 (SO)

    D Jake Dotchin, OS: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 3 GP, 0-2-2, +2, 4 PIM

Barrie scored with 30 seconds left in the game to send the contest to overtime. Lightning prospect defenseman Jake Dotchin was not on the ice for the game-tying goal. Jets first rounder (2011) Mark Scheifele, who “should” be in an NHL camp right now, had a goal and an assist for Barrie, but did not convert his shootout attempt on Rangers pick Jordan Bennington. Bennington, as longtime Bolt prospects followers will remember, was a tandem-mate of former Lightning prospect Michael Zador when Owen Sound won the OHL championship. Zador, who was drafted ahead of Jaroslav Janus in the 2010 draft, appears to be out of hockey now.

    D Dylan Blujus, BRAM: 0-0-0, -1, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 2 GP, 0-1-1, -1, 0 PIM

This was a 2-0 game until two minutes left in the third period when Sudbury scored into an empty net while shorthanded. That gave Blujus his minus-1 for the night. The Battalion ended up scoring about 20 seconds later on the power play, then gave up another empty netter. Nathan Pancel, who finished fourth in OHL rookie scoring last year but went undrafted in June, had two goals for Sudbury.

The London machine came into Guelph and put up an early autumn snowman. Ontario Hockey League

    D Jake Dotchin, OS: 0-0-0, +1, 2 PIM (roughing)
    Season totals: 2 GP, 0-2-2, +2, 4 PIM

Dotchin had two assists in Owen Sound’s opening night win in Windsor, but couldn’t hit the scoresheet in the Attack’s home opener. He’ll take the win, no doubt. Owen Sound’s Daniel Catenacci (Sabres) had a goal and an assist for First Star honors.

    Peterborough Petes 4 @ Ottawa 67’s 3

    D Slater Koekkoek, PBO: 0-0-0, -2, 2 PIM (tripping)

    Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 5 @ Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 3

    C Cedric Paquette, BLB: 1-1-2, +2, 0 PIM, 5 SOG, 2 Hits

A 31-goal scorer last year, Paquette had a goal and an assist in the third period to help the Armada to a 5-3 road win. The Armada was down 2-1 entering the third period. Paquette’s goal turned out to be the game winner. An alternate captain for the team, Paquette was 17 of 28 on faceoffs and centered the Armada’s top line.

    Victoriaville Tigres 3 @ Val-d’Or Foreurs 4 (SO)

    D Artem Sergeev, VDO: 1-1-2, E, 0 PIM, 2 SOG, 2 Hits

Sergeev’s first goal of the year came on the power play and gave Val-d’Or a brief 3-1 lead. He did not participate in the shootout, won by the Foreurs 1-0. Look for a breakout year from Sergeev (pictured) this season.

Note: Nikita Kucherov (Quebec) remains out with a shoulder injury.

    Ontario Hockey League

Niagara IceDogs 2 @ Brampton Battalion 1 (SO)

    D Dylan Blujus, BRAM: 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM

Blujus earned his first point of the season when he had an assist on Brampton’s only goal, scored on a 5-on-3 power play. He had spent the first half of the double man advantage as the triggerman for the Battalion. Blujus did not participate in the shootout. Listening to the radio broadcast, Blujus seemed to never leave the ice.

Saginaw Spirit 3 @ Guelph Storm 4 (OT)

    C/W Tanner Richard, GUE: 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM

Richard had an assist on Andrey Pedan’s (Islanders) power play goal in overtime as Guelph came back from a 3-1 deficit to win their season opener. Leafs second rounder and Guelph captain Matt Finn had three assists for the Storm.

Owen Sound Attack 6 @ Windsor Spitfires 1

    D Jake Dotchin, OS: 0-2-2, +1, 2 PIM (roughing)

Dotchin picked up where he left off in the playoffs last season, contributing offensively with two assists in Owen Sound’s season opener. Dotchin had three assists in five playoff games last spring. He snapped a personal 14-game regular season scoreless streak tonight. Dotchin was drafted by the Lightning in the sixth round of this summer’s draft. Cameron Brace (undrafted) had two goals and an assist for the Attack.

    Oshawa Generals 5 @ Peterborough Petes 2

    D Slater Koekkoek, PBO: 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM

Koekkoek returned to the Peterborough lineup after not only missing all but the Petes’ first 26 games last year, but the last couple weeks of the preseason this year. He was named Peterborough's captain in the offseason before being knocked out of their first preseason game with a badly bruised shoulder. Knocking him out of that game was Columbus prospect Boone Jenner, who had two goals and an assist for Oshawa tonight. Koekkoek was playing his first game since November 27, 2011. He had shoulder surgery last fall. The Lightning took him 10th overall in this summer’s draft.

Former Lightning prospect Geoffrey Schemitsch, an alternate captain for the Generals, had an assist in the game. The Lightning chose not to sign him in the spring, allowing him to re-enter the draft. He was not selected. Schemitsch was traded to the Gens from Owen Sound last year.
