    With Peterborough: 38 GP, 6-22-28, -26, 28 PIM

Slater Koekkoek made his Windsor debut less than 24 hours after being traded by Peterborough and finished plus-1 as the Spits beat the visiting Battalion, 3-0. He made several rushes in the game and just missed a tipping a centering pass into the net in the first period. His attempt missed high. The game was also a match-up of the top two defensemen the Lightning drafted in June and the season debut of Bruins pick Alexander Khokhlachev, who had been playing in Russia. He played for Windsor last year. Koekkoek wore No. 65; he wore 29 in Peterborough. No. 29 is open in Windsor.

    Ontario Hockey League

Owen Sound Attack 3 @ Erie Otters 4

    D Jake Dotchin, OS: 0-0-0, -1, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 38 GP, 2-12-14, +1, 39 PIM

A late delay of game penalty by the Attack resulted in an Otter power play goal with 35 seconds left in regulation that gave Erie a 4-3 home win. Lightning prospect Jake Dotchin was scoreless in the game, but the story here is that he was still with the Attack. He was rumored to be involved in trade talks this week as the OHL trade deadline approached. Senators first round defenseman Cody Ceci was acquired by Owen Sound and had an assist in his Attack debut.

    TRADE

According to multiple reports, Lightning 2012 first rounder Slater Koekkoek was traded late Wednesday night from the Peterborough Petes to the Windsor Spitfires for Avalanche prospect Michael Clark and two second round picks. Koekkoek was rumored to be on the trade block as the Petes are tied for last in the league in points and continue to undergo changes on and off the ice. They’ve replaced their coach and general manager already this year.

Windsor is not much better in the standings than Peterborough (seven points), but their GM, former NHLer Warren Rychel, heads a strong major junior program with the resources to put a winner on the ice. Koekkoek will be back in juniors again next year and Rychel likely had next year in mind when he made this deal. The hope for Koekkoek, who was the Petes captain, is he receives the proper discipline and development to make the jump to the AHL a little smoother in two years while returning Windsor to OHL prominence.

    Tournament totals: 7 GP, 5-3-8, +4, 4 PIM

    Nikita Nesterov, Russia, 0-1-1, -1, 0 PIM, 1 SOG

    Andrey Vasilevskiy, DNP
    Tournament totals: 4 GP, 3-0-1, 1 SO, 1.81 GAA, .950 sv%

Lightning prospect Artem Sergeev had a secondary assist on Valeri Nichuskin's overtime game winning goal to lift Russia to a 6-5 win the Bronze Medal Match of the U20 World Junior Championships in front of the home crowd in Ufa. Fellow Lightning prospect defenseman Nikita Nesterov also chipped in a power play helper in the winning effort. Nikita Kucherov, who is among the tournament leaders in scoring, failed to find the scoresheet against the Canadians. Goaltender Andrey Vasilevskiy, who had both of Russia's previous starts, did not dress for the game. For the Russians, although failing to win Gold on home ice is disappointing, having only lost to the Swedes in a shootout in the Semifinals and then to defeat the Canadians in the Bronze Medal Match is certainly reason to hold their heads high. Sergeev and Kucherov will return to their respective clubs in the QMJHL while Nesterov will likely return to Chelyabinsk of the KHL and Ufa of the KHL will make a determination now on where to assign Vasilevskiy.

    Update:
Team USA defeated Sweden in the Gold Medal Match of the U20 WJC's 3-1.

At the conclusion of the game, the tournament released its awards. By vote of the coaches, Vasilevskiy and Nesterov were named two of Russia's top three players in the tournament.
