I was born in southwest Ontario, but only lived there for a short while before moving with the family to Bradenton, Florida. I grew up playing soccer and baseball before helping to start the first high school roller hockey league in the Tampa Bay area. I played a few years of roller hockey, winning a league championship with a shutout in the championship game and winning the Florida elite roller hockey tournament in Brandon in 1998. After high school, I started my ice hockey career, training at the IMG hockey academy in Ellenton, FL. I was eventually invited to train with the Florida Everblades out of Ft. Myers. Played a few exhibition games for them before deciding to finish college and enrolled at Florida State University. I studied for a career in sports writing and have been working as a freelance writer for the last three years in Florida and Nashville. I've been a Lightning fan since their start in the league and have followed college hockey intensely for the last few seasons.
