TSN is reporting Lightning goalie Sean Burke has been placed on waivers. Burke, 39, is contracted to earn $1.6-million this season, but is coming off a 2005-2006 season when he posted a 2.80 goals against average and .895 save percentage in 35 games with the Lightning. The Lightning have been pretty clear about entering the season with Marc Denis as the No.1 and Johan Holmqvist as the No.2. According to Erik Erlendsson's Blog on the Tampa Tribune site, Burke is indeed expected to report to Springfield if unclaimed. The hope is another team claims him and relieves the Lightning of at least some of the $1.6 million Burke is owed this season. Assuming no team claims Burke, Tampa Bay will then recall him and hope he is claimed on the way "up." The advantage in claiming him at this time is the claiming team would only be responsible for one-half the salary and take on one-half the cap hit and the same for the Lightning. If he reports to Springfield, Burke will join Karri Ramo, Jonathan Boutin, Gerald Coleman, and Morgan Cey, who are currently battling it out for right to stay in Springfield. Ramo is accompanying the Lightning to Montreal this week as Denis will not make the trip. Erlendsson reports center Blair Jones has also been recalled as a substitute for Andreas Karlsson, who is battling "groin fatigue." Prospects Matt Smaby and Nick Tarnasky will play against the Habs. Mike Egener and Paul Ranger will make the trip to Montreal, but not play.
