OHL Season Begins

The 2005-06 Ontario Hockey League season got underway last night when Paul Mara's alma mater, the Plymouth Whalers, beat Marek Kvapil's former team, the Saginaw Spirit, 7-2. It looks like Saginaw is in for a long year once again. A Lightning member in Traverse City this year, Spirit defenseman Steve Whitely, was minus-two for the game. Tonight, September 22, Lightning prospects get into action as Marek Bartanus and the Owen Sound Attack visit the Barrie Colts. Bartanus had a goal in Owen Sound's final exhibition game and is expected to provide offense in his first season in North America. Bartanus, a fourth round pick of the Bolts this year, had 14 goals and 14 assists in 34 games for HC Kosice in the Slovakia junior league last year. He also showed some grit in amassing 99 penalty minutes. He was promoted to HC Kosice in Slovakia's top league, where he notched 2 goals in 24 games, but only 2 penalty minutes. The 6'3", 194-pound right winger went scoreless in four Traverse City games and while Lightning Head Scout Jake Goertzen did not criticize Bartanus's game, he did say that Bartanus told him he was not happy with his play in the tournament.
