CHL, BCHL Weekend Recap

Riku Helenius and Dana Tyrell had strong showings this weekend, to say nothing of WHL goals and points leader Mitch Fadden.

(Season stats included)

Saturday, 9/29

Lewiston MAINEiacs 2 @ Halifax Mooseheads 1
D Michael Ward, LEW: 0-0-0, -1, 6 PIM, 2 SOG

Ward and Lewiston got revenge on the Mooseheads by winning the second of a back-to-back set.
Ward: 7 GP, 0-3-3, -6, 20 PIM

Prince George Cougars 4 @ Chilliwack Bruins 6
C/W Dana Tyrell, PG: 2-1-3, +1, 0 PIM

Tyrell made his season debut with a strong offensive showing. The Cougars are said to be offensively-challenged this season and a lot of pressure is on Tyrell’s shoulders to lead the team on the stat sheet.
Tyrell: 1 GP, 2-1-1, E, 0 PIM

Saskatoon Blades 1 @ Lethbridge Hurricanes 3
C Mitch Fadden, LET: 1-1-2, +1, 0 PIM

Fadden notched his second multi-point game in a row for the Hurricanes. He'd move that streak to three on Sunday.

Everett Silvertips 1 @ Seattle Thunderbirds 3
G Riku Helenius, SEA: Win, 23 saves on 24 shots, *Second Star*
D Dane Crowley, EVT: 0-0-0, -1, 2 PIM

Helenius got his first North American win over Crowley and the struggling Silvertips. Crowley is expected to flirt with 40-50 points this year, but like his team is off to a slow start. Helenius beat Calgary Flames first rounder Leland Irving, who is now 0-3 for Everett.

"We carried a lot of the play, but when Riku was called on, especially in the second period with some point-blank chances from the slot, he made some game-changing saves," Seattle coach Rob Sumner told the Seattle Times.

Helenius: 2 GP, 1-0-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL), 1.93 GAA, .922 sv%
Crowley: 2 GP, 0-1-1, -3, 2 PIM.

Kelowna Rockets 0 @ Vancouver Giants 5
G Torrie Jung, KEL: 16 saves on 18 shots in relief.

Both Jung and Kelowna’s “other” goalie, Kristofer Westblom, are struggling so far in net for the Rockets. The duo was expected to be one of the best in the WHL. Their goals against and save percentage stats are nearly identical.
Jung: 2 GP, 1-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL), 4.26 GAA, .887 sv%

Victoria Grizzlies 6 @ Alberni Valley Bulldogs 2
W Justin Courtnall, VIC: 1-0-1, 5 PIM

Courtnall was an assist short of a Gordie Howe hat-trick as he scored his second goal of the year and threw the gloves down in the third period against the Bulldogs.
Courtnall: 8 GP, 2-4-6, 11 PIM

Sunday, September 30

Lethbridge Hurricanes 3 @ Edmonton Oil Kings 0
C Mitch Fadden, LET: 1-1-2, +2, 0 PIM

With a goal and shorthanded assist, Fadden has at least a point in every game so far this season for Lethbridge and three multi-point games in a row. Fadden is tied for the WHL lead in goals and points.
Fadden: 5 GP, 5-4-9, +4, 2 PIM
