N.A. Juniors Game Night: 1/5

Scores and notes from the BCHL, QMJHL and WHL, including a possible honor for Torrie Jung and a big night for the Courtnalls.

BCHL
Victoria Grizzlies 5 @ Vernon Vipers 4
W Justin Courtnall, VIC: 0-3-3, 2 PIM (interference), *Second Star*

Justin helped his dad, Geoff, win his first game in five tries as Grizzlies coach.

QMJHL
Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 4 @ Lewiston MAINEiacs 3 (SO)
D Michael Ward, LEW: 0-1-1, +2, 0 PIM, 0 shots on goal

WHL

Of Note: Goaltender Torrie Jung, who is creating a goaltending controversy in Kelowna, was nominated by the WHL for the CHL Goaltender of the Week. In three starts last week, Jung won each game while allowing three goals on 75 shots for a 0.960 save percentage. Says Sportsnet.ca: "Given the way Jung stepped up, the Rockets could be looking to trade [overage goaltender Kristofer] Westblom before the deadline this week for secondary scoring or depth on defense."

Scores:

Prince George Cougars 1 @ Portland Winter Hawks 3
C/W Dana Tyrell, PG: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM

This was a battle of the league's worst teams, with Portland secured at the bottom of the standings. The Cougars traded leading scorer and Sharks first rounder Ty Wishart to the Moose Jaw Warriors. Tyrell was recently mentioned in the PG paper as being untouchable.

Everett Silvertips 4 @ Tri-City Americans 3 (SO)
D Dane Crowley, EVT: 0-0-0, -1, 2 PIM (elbowing)

Crowley’s name is being thrown around in WHL trade rumors should fifth place Everett decides to be sellers at the deadline. Colton Yellow Horn of Tri-City, who played for the Lightning at the Traverse City prospects tournament in September, recently had his 22 game point streak snapped. He had an assist and shootout goal in this game, his 300th WHL regular season contest.
