Smaby Unsure of Future

Fresh off a disappointing Frozen Four National Semi-Final loss to Boston College, University of North Dakota captain and defenseman Matt Smaby is unsure if he'll be back with the Sioux next year, or choose to sign with the Lightning. Smaby told the Grand Forks Herald that he hasn't thought through the decision just yet. "My thoughts have been focused on other things," said Smaby, who was voted team captain before the season. Smaby and Buffalo draft pick and fellow junior Drew Stafford are drawing the most interest from Sioux fans already saying "Wait 'til next year." The Herald reported that both Stafford and Smaby have elevated their games enough this season to make many think this will be their last in college. The Lightning tried to sign Smaby last off-season but the 6'5" 220 pound defenseman wanted to return to school to play a bigger role with the Sioux. If he chooses to sign, there is a chance he could join the Lightning's roster as an extra defenseman or be a part of Johnstown's playoff effort in the ECHL. He could also finish out the school year and begin his professional career next season.
