Scouting Report

Scouting Comments:

"Smallish winger is not the biggest, fastest, or most skilled prospect, but is a very honest player who hustles his ass off and will never cheat you on effort. Shows a keen awareness all over the ice - knows linemates' position on ice without having to look. Has instant chemistry with any linemates. Makes effective moves in tight on the rush. Fast crossovers generate speed out of his cuts - gains separation easily. Pulls off the offensive zone cycle into the high slot to create opportunities. Despite his size, shows a willingness to drive into coverage. Hard to strip the puck off him - uses his body to protect it well. Effective on the PP and understands passing angles. Creatively switches hands on stick to protect the puck with driving wide. Strong backchecker comes down deep to get into passing lanes. Terrific work ethic in all three zones." - Red Line Report

Game Night 10/21: Chiefs at Inferno

JHN-2 COL-4 Three third period goals doomed the Chiefs in their first game of the season. Veteran netminder David Currie takes the loss for the Chiefs. Zbynek Hrdel started the game on the top line for Johnstown with Jay Rosehill playing on the second pairing and John Toffey seeing checking line duty. The game scoring comes from ECHL.com. The Chiefs' home opener and presumably the professional debut of Jonathan Boutin will come tomorrow night in Johnstown against Reading.

Anzalone Leaning Towards Currie for Road Opener

Mastovich has an article up on the beginning of the Chiefs' season tonight on the road in Columbia. According to Coach Anzalone, he's leaning towards starting veteran netminder Currie on the road in a hostile environment tonight before starting Lightning prospect Jonathan Boutin tomorrow night in the team's home opener against Reading.

Belated Big Ups to Justin Keller

Apologies for this story being two days late with Chad out in California this week... Wednesday night, in a battle of two of the most potent offenses in the WHL, Kelowna defeated Moose Jaw on the strength of a 3G 1A effort in overtime 7-6. Keller, who scored the OT game winner, was the obvious choice for first star of the game. Moose Jaw's Blair Jones also had a goal in the contest.

The Cold Blooded Truth

Coach Tortorella went on a poigniant profanity laced tirade tonight after the game with the best of his vitriol aimed towards Eric Boulton and his cheap shot elbow on young Paul Ranger. "The . . . guy should be playing in the . . . East Coast Hockey League, but instead he takes out a . . . NHLer," Tortorella said. "He'll be suspended, but who . . . cares? No one wants to see him on the ice anyway." Eric Boulton may have gotten away with his disgusting act of cowardice tonight by the grace of the officials ushering him out of the building quicker than Colonel Parker got Elvis off the stage in Vegas back-in-the-day, but sans a reprieve from Hartley in the form of a scratch or the league in the form of a well intentioned but ill timed suspension Boulton will have to face retribution Saturday October 29th. Circle it on your calendar Eric Boulton. And if I may suggest to tool of Eric Boulton's execution. I'd tell Fritzy to put him in the morgue.

Bartanus Finds the Twine in Attack Win

Marek Bartanus scored his first North American goal tonight to pace the Owen Sound Attack to a 3-2 win over the Barrie Colts. Bartanus scored the game's first goal and finished with a plus-one rating. He now has one goal and one assist on the year.

Game Night 10/20: Lightning at Thrashers

The Lightning torched the Thrashers young goaltenders as Nick Tarnasky and Evgeny Artyukhin made quiet NHL debuts each with just under 8 minutes of ice time a piece. Paul Ranger continued to settle into his job as the Lightning's #6 defenseman getting over 15 minutes of ice time and rating a +2 before receiving a vicious cheap shot elbow from a Thrasher forechecker. Vinny Lecavalier with a 4 point night. I hope a certain so-called editor from Hockey's Future enjoyed the game. I know I did.

Frolunda Proves to Be Norrena's Kryptonite

It's been 54 days since Fredrik Norrena began his season for Linkopings of the Swedish Elitserien. 54 days of unbeaten excellence, until today when Norrena was dropped by Tommy Salo and Vastra Frolunda 6-2 in a marquee early season matchup. Nearly two months into the season, Norrena's record drops to 8-1-1. The Finnish born netminder stopped 19 of 25 shots faced in the loss.

Packard/Kelly Recalled to Springfield

The domino effect of Evgeny Artyukhin and Nick Tarnasky's callup to Tampa reached Johnstown as winger Dennis Packard has been recalled to Springfield of the AHL. Packard, who had a goal and the clinching shootout talley in Johnstown's last exhibition game, will be available when the Falcons play Hartford at home Friday night. Also recalled to Springfield was C Justin Kelly. Kelly had 65 points in 57 games last season with Adirondack of the UHL. Update: Mastovich says that Kelly is currently injured. It will be interesting to see Springfield's lineup this weekend.

Glukhov En Fuego

There may be no hotter playmaker in all of Russia over the past couple of weeks than Lightning prospect Alexei Glukhov. Today, against Lada Togliatti, Glukhov assisted on a pair of second period goals as Khimik MO defeated Lada 5-1. Glukhov has 9 assists in 17 games so far this season, the most amongst all Lightning Russian prospects. On the other side of the rink, goaltender Vasily Koshechkin left the game for Togliatti after allowing 2 goals in 30:11 of action. Veteran David Svoboda allowed three goals in the remainder of the game. Dimitry Kazionov also dressed for Togliatti. Nikita Alexeev, however, was a scratch for Omsk's 3-2 loss to Salavat Yulayev. The former first round pick has just 5 points in 16 games this season.

Artyukhin and Tarnkasy Called Up

The Springfield Falcons announced today that forwards Evgeny Artyukhin and Nick Tarnasky have been recalled by the Lightning. Both players will join the Lightning in Atlanta for Thursday night's game against the Thrashers.
