Scouting Report

Scouting Comments:

"Smallish winger is not the biggest, fastest, or most skilled prospect, but is a very honest player who hustles his ass off and will never cheat you on effort. Shows a keen awareness all over the ice - knows linemates' position on ice without having to look. Has instant chemistry with any linemates. Makes effective moves in tight on the rush. Fast crossovers generate speed out of his cuts - gains separation easily. Pulls off the offensive zone cycle into the high slot to create opportunities. Despite his size, shows a willingness to drive into coverage. Hard to strip the puck off him - uses his body to protect it well. Effective on the PP and understands passing angles. Creatively switches hands on stick to protect the puck with driving wide. Strong backchecker comes down deep to get into passing lanes. Terrific work ethic in all three zones." - Red Line Report

Vishnyakov's Hot Streak Continues

The early season surprise of the Lightning's Russian prospects continued his torrid scoring pace today. Albert Vishnyakov scored two third period goals today as Dynamo knocked off Molot Perm 4-2. Also, in other action, Anton But scored a goal in Yaroslavl's 5-2 win over Chekov.

Rogers: Signed, Sealed and Sent Back to Junior?

620 WDAE is reporting defenseman Andy Rogers has been signed by the Lightning, and then promptly has been assigned to his junior club, Prince George of the WHL. The decision makes Timo Helbling the winner of the Lightning's #6 defenseman job. Erik Erlendsson of the Trib confirms the signing and subsequent reassignment.

Springfield Re-assigns Nine to Johnstown

According to a Springfield Falcons Press Release, the following players were re-assigned to Johnstown (ECHL): Zbynek Hrdel (LW), John Toffey (LW), Randy Rowe (LW), Jonathan Boutin (G), Jay Rosehill (D), Brandon Elliott (F), Dennis Packard (LW), Justin Kelly (C), and Jean-Francois Soucy (LW). The Falcons have reduced their roster to 24 players including: three goaltenders, eight defensemen and 13 forwards. Springfield completed their preseason with a record of 2-1, including victories over the Providence Bruins and Hartford Wolf Pack. Noteable among those remaining in Springfield are goaltenders Morgan Cey and Gerald Coleman, who now move into the finals of their battle to back-up Brian Eklund.

Holmqvist Notches First Point of Elitserien Season

Andreas Holmqvist was moved from the fourth pairing to the top pairing today for Linkopings and responded by notching his first point of the season, an assist on Tim Eriksson's second period goal. Fredrik Norrena stopped 38 of 41 shots faced as Linkopings defeated Leksands 4-3 to stay undefeated for the season. Through four games now Norrena is 4-0-0 with a 1.75 GAA and a .942 save percentage. Linkopings currently sits in first place on the Swedish Elitserien table.

CHL Weekend Wrap-up

Leading Lightning prospects this past weekend were Chicoutimi winger Stanislav Lascek and Moose Jaw center Blair Jones, both with first-star efforts. Individual reports and stats include:

Lightning/Rogers Face Monday Signing Deadline

According to Erik Erlendsson of the Trib, the Lightning are currently in contract negotiations with 19 year old defenseman Andy Rogers. The deadline to sign Rogers will be at 5pm Monday otherwise Rogers will have to be returned to his junior team, Prince George of the WHL. The mere fact that the Lightning are seriously discussing a contract with Rogers is likely an indication the club is favoring the blueliner over his competitor Timo Helbling. However, nothing is set in stone, and the team could still return Rogers to junior within 10 NHL games played.

Game Day 10/2: Wolfpack at Falcons (Exhibition)

Today's game represents one last chance to impress for bubble players looking to avoid reassignment to Johnstown of the ECHL. Among the players possibly in danger of missing the cut are: Morgan Cey, Zbynek Hrdel, J.F. Soucy, Brandon Elliot, Gerald Coleman and Dennis Packard. On a personal note, I'm plunking down the $6 for B2 Network's cybercast. Pretty good quality thus far. Looks like Eklund starting with Coleman backing up. Recap from Falconsahl.com is up. HFD-4 SPR-5 (Final-OT) 1st Period 1. Hartford- Giroux, (Genoway) The Falcons are getting dominated at even strength by the Wolfpack, and that was especially so early in the period. Wolfpack took a handful of penalties that helped the Falcons get their legs, and although the power play looked decent and generated some chances the Falcons squandered a 5-on-3 and some other opportunities. 2nd Period 2. Hartford- Dawes, (Baranka, Tselios) 3. Springfield- Henrich, (Reid, Rohloff) 4. Springfield- Jaspers, (Deveaux, Craig) 5. Springfield- Greco, (Milley, Campbell) 6. Hartford- Sparre

Game Day 10/2: Lightning at Panthers (Exhibition)

I'd rather have Luongo burn a performance like this in the preseason rather than when the bullets are real. Timo Helbling gets his last chance to impress today before the final cut. TB-0 FLA-4 (Final) 1st Period 1. Florida- Hagman, (Gratton) (SH) 2nd Period 2. Florida- Huselius, (Olesz) 3rd Period 3. Florida- Hagman, (Huselius, Gratton) 4. Florida- Horton, (Weiss) (PP) Loss: John Grahame, 17/21 (2/2) Shootout TB-2 FLA-0 1. Richards (0) 2. St. Louis (X) 3. Lecavalier (X) And the preseason mercifully comes to a conclusion.

Lightning Prospects Have Strong Showing in 11th Superleague Tour

After a couple a down tours, the Lightning prospects stepped up in tour 11 of the Russian Superleague. Surprise prospect of the season Albert Vishnyakov led the way with Dynamo's final goal in a 3-0 victory over CSKA. The goal is Vishnyakov's 4th of the season and his 7 points in 11 games moves him past Alex Polushin into second place in scoring amongst Lightning Russian prospects. Polushin's Cherepovets club will finish the 11th tour tomorrow in a match against SKA St. Petersburg. Anton But assisted on a game opening Nik Ignatov goal as Yaroslavl tied Tver 2-2. Awaking from a long slumber, winger Nikita Alexeev assisted on a 3rd period goal to send Omsk to overtime where they eventually fell 2-1 to Kazan. Alexei Glukhov assisted on Valeri Zelepukin's game opening goal as Khimik defeated Nizhnekamsk 2-1.

Perrin Scores His First in SC Bern Victory

Center Eric Perrin scored his first goal of the NLA season yesterday as SC Bern defeated Fribourg 3-1. With the goal Perrin now has 1 goal, 5 assists and 6 points in 8 games.
