The 2005 Memorial Cup Finalist Rimouski Oceanic finished the 2005 regular season with nearly a 30-game win streak. Now without stars Sidney Crosby and ex-Florida Panther property Dany Roussin, the team is hardly the threat or attendance draw they were just a year ago. L'Oceanic opened the 2005-06 season with a 5-0 loss at home to rival Quebec. To make matters worse for Rimouski, former Oceanic goaltender Cedrick Desjardins
earned the shutout by stopping 30 shots. Maxime Joyal, who split time with Lightning prospect Jonathan Boutin
last year with the Remparts, rode the pine.
Lightning prospect and Newfoundland native Mark Tobin
, being counted on as a leader on the new Oceanic, managed 3 shots on goal in the contest and finished with a minus-3 rating. He also accumulated 7 penalty minutes in the game. Tobin, a second round pick of the Lightning in 2004 and the fourth Rimouski prospect for the Bolts after Vincent Lecavalier
, Brad Richards
, and Zbynek Hrdel
, was coming off a less-than-stellar Traverse City tournament statistically. He was one of only a few prospects who failed to register a point in the four-game tournament.
Rimouski began Thursday night’s game by raising their championship banners. The team will be hard pressed to be doing the same next year at this time. L’Oceanic next play September 18 vs. Drummondville. Stanislav Lascek
and Chicoutimi begin their season tonight vs. Baie-Comeau.
