UMASS plays host to the US Under-18 team in an exhibition game tonight.
A funny thing happens when you put forth an effort.
Johan Holmqvist stopped 28 of 29 shots faced for the victory.
You might've noticed there was no game thread for the Detroit game. That was not an accident. After sleepwalking for six period straight my attitude was that if the team didn't care, honestly, why should I?
Tonight, however, the effort level and the will to compete was back, and they put together a sold, convincing win against a club they traditionally struggle against. Funny that. The harder you work the better you get.
Mike Lundin blocked 1 shot in 17:56 of ice time as he remains on track for an early January graduation from prospect status. Tonight was his 26th NHL game, leaving him 15 short of the finish line by site criteria.
Mathieu Darche had 1 goal, 3 shots, 2 hits, 1 blocked shot, and a +1 rating in 18:12 of ice time. Now 19 games played into his season, Darche needs 22 more to graduate from prospect status, which could happen as early as mid January.
Ramo returns. Norfolk's defense and PK evaporates.
Karri Ramo started well stopping 17 of 18 shots in the first period but wore down in the second half of the game allowing 6 goals on the final 15 shots he faced. He finished the game with a total of 7 goals allowed on 33 shots faced. Tough way to come back.

The Admirals did a great job rallying to take the lead in the third period only to completely self destruct in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
The scoring could have been even higher had a premature whistle in the first period not nullified a goal that trickled through Binghamton's netminder that would've made it 3-0 Norfolk.
In any event, the positives to take away are the continued strong play of prospect Justin Keller and PTO Adam Henrich. Henrich had 1 goal and 7 shots on goal while Keller finished with 1 goal, 1 assist and 8 shots on goal.

Norfolk is two points out of the final playoff spot in the division with Binghamton holding 2 games in hand, so tomorrow night's game against the Senators has some obvious importance. Rumors last week placed a possible Karri Ramo return for the game tomorrow night, but seeing as Karl Goehring dressed as the backup tonight that remains to be seen.
