Johan Harju had a goal and was +1 with 3 shots on goal in 14:25 as Sweden downed Switzerland 4-1.
N.A. Juniors Playoff Game Night: 5/1
Fargo falls to 7-1 in the playoffs, 1-1 in the Finals ... RBC Cup opens with host Victoria snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Cincinnati completed a four game sweep of the Elmira Jackals Friday night (5/1), with a Game Four 2-0 victory. Kevin Quick was -1 with 1 shot on goal in the matchup.
Quick finished the playoffs with 1 assist and a -7 rating in 9 games. It remains one of the bizarre contradictions of Quick's career thus far. Quick drips offensive talent, and yet he has rarely found the scoresheet as a pro. Next season it will be critical for Quick to translate his athletic gifts to tangible production in the AHL.
Fellow Lightning prospect Riku Helenius finished the postseason with an 0-1-0 record, a 6.91 GAA, and a .787 save percentage. Ugh. Helenius did a very good job in Norfolk after assuming the starting duties from Karri Ramo and Mike McKenna when Mike Smith and Olaf Kolzig got injured. His ugly two game stint in the ECHL playoffs should probably be treated as an unpleasant speed bump and nothing much more.
Martins Karsums had 2 assists and was +3 with 3 shots on goal in 16:48 as Latvia stayed hot, crushing France 7-1.
Karri Ramo did not suit up for Finland, which lost a shocker to Belarus 2-1 in a shootout. Janne Niskala had 1 goal and 5 shots on goal in 21:46 for the Finns. The game was Niskala's second of the tournament. He has 1 goal and 2 points with a +1 rating, 2 penalty minutes, and 9 shots on goal. He is also averaging 21:11 in ice time for Finland.
Tomorrow could be quite the blood bath, as Norway runs into the buzzsaw, Canada, which has dominated in the tournament thus far.
Johan Harju had 2 shots on goal and was +1 in 12:22 as Sweden fell to Russia 6-5 in overtime.
Martins Karsums had 2 shots on goal in 19:16 as the pesky Latvians beat home nation Switzerland 2-1.
Steven Stamkos potted 2 goals and added an assist as Canada crushed Czech Republic 5-1. Stamkos also had 2 shots on goal and 2 penalty minutes with a +1 rating in 11:07. Martin St. Louis chipped in 1 goal and 1 assist in the contest.
After dropping Game Three tonight at home against the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-2 to fall behind 3-0 in the series, things are looking bleak for the Elmira Jackals. Kevin Quick got his first playoff assist on a late third period helper on a Mike Sgroi goal, but it was too little too late for the Jackals.
Elmira lost both games in Cincinatti over the weekend. They were pounded 8-3 last Friday (4/24) in Game One and lost a much closer matchup 5-4 in overtime in Game Two the following night (4/25).
Riku Helenius saw mop up duty in Game One of the series allowing 4 goals on 9 shots. It was his second appearance of a playoffs he might rather forget. Helenius is 0-1-0 with a 6.91 GAA and a brutal .787 save percentage thus far.
Quick has the 1 assist and is -6 in 8 games thus far.
Martins Karsums had 25 penalty minutes and 2 shots on goal in 6:32 as Latvia defeated Austria 2-0. Karsums received a game misconduct for boarding midway through the match.
Johan Harju had 2 shots on goal and was -1 as Sweden rebounded to defeat Team USA 6-5 in overtime. Harju and his lifelong teammate Linus Omark were held scoreless for the first time in the tournament in the match.
Karri Ramo backed up Pekka Rinne as Finland defeated the Czech Republic 4-3.
