This is just a tired looking Lightning team right now. Mentally, physically, tired.
Mike Smith allowed 5 goals on 33 shots for the loss.
Carolina 1:02, Joe Corvo 8 (Sergei Samsonov, Eric Staal)
Carolina 10:01, Sergei Samsonov 10 (power play) (Frantisek Kaberle, Scott Walker)
Carolina 4:02, Sergei Samsonov 11 (Patrick Eaves, Matt Cullen)
Carolina 6:00, Tuomo Ruutu 7 (Eric Staal, Erik Cole)
With all due respect, I think the Lightning are making a mistake not giving Karri Ramo at least half the starts from here on out. Smith is a more known commodity at this stage of his career, but Ramo only has 14 NHL decisions under his belt thus far. Here, in garbage time of the season, is a perfect opportunity to get Ramo more acclimated with the NHL. At the very least, on the tail end of a back-to-back, he should've gotten the start tonight. That's not to say any of the 5 goals tonight were necessarily Smith's fault, it's just a comment on how the Lightning need to look forward strategically to how they're going to lay the foundation for next season.
Coincidentally though, tonight was Smith's 41st career decision. So, technically, he became a Bolt Prospects alumni tonight. Strange but true.
I'm enjoying watching Alex Picard play. You can definitely see there's something there, and I think he could still put on another 5-10 pounds of muscle easily.
