A three goal deficit in the Third Period of a pro hockey is just a death sentence 99% of the time. You'll see teams get that "false hope goal" to pull within one, but they rarely have enough gas to get the equalizer. It happened again to Syracuse today. They managed to get the false hope goal with a good 5+ minutes to go, but just couldn't find the equalizer. That's why you need timely goaltending and goal scoring to stay within 2 and give yourself a chance, because it's doom if you get down by 3.
