Slater Koekkoek extended his point streak to four games with a late assist in Saturday night’s loss to Ottawa. The game was not as close as the final score indicates as Ottawa held a 5-1 lead early in the second period. The Petes were able to put 51 shots on net, however. Koekkoek was on the ice for four of the 67’s goals, but only had a direct effect in two of the goals against. His play in his own end was active, but sporadic. The commentators during the game mentioned how the d-corps of the Petes had trouble executing the game plan and had several bouts of miscommunication. Offensively, Koekkoek was solid and efficient, making several deep rushes and long passes to set up teammates. He looks to rush the puck a lot and has the skill and wheels to do so. It seems obvious he has the green light to rush it whenever he wants. He plays like a player who is expected to provide most of the offense for the club. The OHL trade deadline is coming up and Koekkoek’s name has been in rumors, though with another year of junior in his future, it’s unlikely that a player of his skill and age would be dealt. London is always looking to deal and playing in London with the Hunters would do wonders for Koekkoek’s development.
