Award

Event tag that describes a prospect receiving some kind of award

Prospect of the Week: September 25, 2012

Last season we introduced our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their recent contributions on the ice.

While Cory Conacher won nearly every AHL award in which he was eligible last year, plus a Calder Cup, we’re fairly certain he’s got a printed copy of his Bolt Prospects Prospect of the Week write-ups stashed in his hockey bag to remind him what can come from dedication and hard work. In the paraphrased words of Ron Burgundy, we don’t know how to put this, but this award is a kind of a big deal.

Now, whether or not the award smells of rich mahogany is up for debate, but we like it regardless.

At any rate, this week’s BP Prospect of the Week award – the first of the season – goes to … Andrei Vasilevski, goaltender, Ufa Jr. (MHL - Russia).

Prospect of the Week (6.12.12)

This season Bolt Prospects introduced our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their on-ice contributions.

We wanted to highlight prospects throughout the year to help fans get better acquainted with the next round of Lightning stars while recognizing the prospect’s achievement on the ice.

This week’s BP Prospect of the Week award, the last of the season, goes to … Jon Cooper, Coach, Norfolk Admirals (AHL).

While not a Lightning prospect in the true definition of a Lightning prospect, Admirals Head Coach Jon Cooper is certainly an NHL prospect. His name was mentioned when the Montreal Canadiens were searching for a new bench boss and with Edmonton and Washington needing coaches, it's being mentioned again – especially after Cooper’s Admirals won the Calder Cup on Saturday afternoon. The bottom line is he’ll be in the NHL soon.

Prospect of the Week (6.1.12)

This season Bolt Prospects introduced our Prospect of the Week award, an honor (virtually) given to one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect for their on-ice contributions.

This week’s (belated) BP Prospect of the Week award goes to … Sebastien Piche, Charles Landry, and Pat Nagle (Florida Everblades, ECHL).

These three Lightning prospects helped the Florida Everblades to their first Kelly Cup championship last Wednesday when the ‘Blades topped the Las Vegas Wranglers, 3-2, on an overtime goal by rookie Brendan MacLean.

Helenius Wins Urpo Ylonen Award

Goaltender Riku Helenius (pictured biting his SM-Liiga championship medal) has won Finland's coveted Urpo Ylonen Award as the SM-liiga's top goaltender. He was also named to the all-league team along with JYP teammate and ex-Lightning forward Eric Perrin. The good news was announced on May 5th.

Helenius stormed through the Finnish regular season with a dominant 1.64 GAA and .936 save percentage before having an even better playoffs, only losing 2 games en route to leading JYP to the SM-liiga title. The Lightning are rumored to have interest in re-signing Helenius if Finland and the NHL agree to a new IIHF Transfer Agreement and Helenius also has reportedly received significant interest from KHL team Mytischi. Helenius was also a finalist for SM-liiga rookie of the year, but that award was given to Tuevo Teravainen of Jokerit, who is expected to be a first round pick in the June draft.

Notable past winners of the Urpo Ylonen include:

Niklas Backstrom (2003-2004, 2004-2005)
Karri Lehtonen (2001-2002, 2002-2003)
Miikka Kiprusoff (1998-1999)
Tim Thomas (1997-1998)
