Crunch Fall Behind Early, Lose to Americans 4-1

By Jeremy Houghtaling

Syracuse Crunch coach Rob Zettler will look at the tape, but he already knows what it will show.

The Crunch allowed three first period goals and struggled to get sustained pressure, as they fell to the Americans, 4-1, at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester Friday.

"All of our chances came from getting it deep and then going from there," Zettler said. "We have some good size and we have some guys that can grind it out down low, but we weren't committed to doing that."

Thin Crunch defense ad rusty goaltending exposed.

SYR-1
RCH-4

Kristers Gudlevskis allowed 4 goals on 26 shots for the loss. After the game, Head Coach Rob Zettler said Gudlevsis might've wanted a couple of those goals back. That's perhaps unsurprising considering tonight was Kristers' first game action in a couple of weeks since standing on his head against Canada in the Olympics. Rust and readjustment were perhaps to be expected.

With injuries and the recent trade of Matt Taormina leaving the Crunch thin on the backline, they had to press some of their more fringe prospects into service. The result was Rochester swiftly racing out to a 4-0 lead. Follow the minuses and you'll see exactly who Rochester was picking on. Couple a green D with shaky goaltending, and that's the end result.

KHL Playoff Game Day: 3-7-14

Nadezhda Cup
Dinamo Minsk 1 vs. Bratislava 0
Jaroslav Janus, Bratislava, DNP
Regular season totals: 41 GP, 15-18-8, 2 SO, 2.86 GAA, .898 sv%
Nadezhda Cup totals: 0 GP, 0-0-0, 0 SO, 0.00 GAA, 1.000 sv%

Jaroslav Janus sat backup today for Bratislava's 1-0 Nadezhda Cup opening loss to Minsk. The Nadezhda Cup is sort of a mini "best of the worst" tournament for KHL clubs that don't make the postseason. Slovan managed just 16 shots on goal in the tight-checking defeat.

The day also saw the start of the KHL Eastern Conference playoffs with 4 games, none of which featured Lightning prospects. Magnitogorsk (Koshechkin) and Ufa (Vasilevskiy) will begin their KHL Western Conference playoff runs tomorrow while Khanty-Mansiysk (Gusev) will get their first kick at the can in the Nadezhda Cup.

2012-13 totals: 42 GP, 6-23-29, -24, 28 PIM

The Spits took it on the chin at home to Saginaw. Koekkoek left the game injured after his fight with Jeremiah Addison (6-0, 183; 2014 eligible). Addison made a big, clean check on a Spitfire and Koekkoek answered by dropping his gloves. Neither player got a punch in before Addison wrestled/twisted Koekkoek to the ice. According to Windsor Star reporter Jim Parker, the team is calling Koekkoek’s ailment an upper body injury and he will not play Friday. This will be Koekkoek’s first game missed due to injury this year after missing at least half of the last two seasons.
