NHL Game Night: 1-9-14 Capitals at Lightning

At least 1 point left on the ice.

WSH-4
TB-3

Anders Lindback allowed 4 goals on 20 shots for the loss. He had a fairly ugly First Period, but got stronger as the game went on. It's a shame a couple of turnovers in the waning moments turned the comeback bid sour. Again, Lindback wasn't great tonight, but he wasn't the reason the Lightning lost.

First Period
4:08 TB Johnson (12), (Palat)
7:04 WSH Fehr (7), (Ovechkin, Alzner)
10:37 WSH Grabovski (12), (Ward, Green)(PP)
19:48 WSH Johansson (7), (Backstrom, Carlson)(PP)

Second Period
6:45 TB Crombeen (1), (Hedman, Pyatt)

Third Period
14:30 TB Palat (9), (Carle, St Louis)
19:08 WSH Fehr (8), (Green, Orlov)

Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson were the game's second and third stars.

I feel absolutely sick. The Lightning were in a tough spot coming into this game having to play Lindback against a team with as much firepower as the Capitals. To see that compounded by losing Gudas partway through this game, on paper, this should have been a bloodbath. So, when the Lightning managed to piece together a 3-3 tie late in the Third Period, I was absolutely ecstatic. And then the future-HOF captain of the team decided to wet the bed at the clutchest moment of the contest making a horrific drop pass turnover 5 feet inside the opposing blueline and compounding it by subsequently failing to get a clear 5 feet inside his own blueline at the other end. Lindback turned in one good save on the ensuing sequence but, my goodness, when you know you have your backup in net that's all the more reason to make sure you make the north-south play with so little time left and a point within sight. People are going to want to lay this at the feet of Lindback and he certainly makes an easy target of himself but I cannot believe #26 did that. That was about as good an effort as the team can probably put together in those circumstances (even outshooting Washington 36-20) and to fail to get the result because of that just hurts. So bad.

Radko Gudas had 1 hit and 1 blocked shot in 6:22 before leaving the game with a lower body injury.

Mark Barberio had 1 hit and 2 blocked shots in 17:27 forced into heavy duty with Gudas out.

J.P. Cote had 2 hits in 12:17.

Nikita Kucherov had 3 shots and 1 blocked shot in 13:28. Circle those 3 takeaways on the stat sheet, too. Those are nice.

AHL Game Night: 1-8-14 Crunch at Penguins

Connolly remains on fire.

SYR-4
WBS-2

Kristers Gudlevskis allowed 2 goals on 26 shots for the victory.

First Period
SYR Namestnikov, (11) (Connolly, DiSalvatore), 13:17 (PP)
SYR DiSalvatore, (1) (Connolly, Mormina), 13:47 (PP)

Second Period
SYR Connolly, (9) (Nesterov, DiSalvatore), 8:04
SYR Paquette, (10) (Richard, Witkowski), 8:59
WBS Samuelsson, (1) (Manderson, Mikkelson), 17:39

Third Period
WBS Samuelsson, (2) (Kuhnhackl, Carman), 15:11

Jon DiSalvatore and Brett Connolly were the game's first and second stars. Connolly, if you're keeping track at home, just posted his 3rd consecutive 3-point night. He now has 9 goals and 23 points in 24 games. A lot of disappointment has been expressed by Lightning fans based on Connolly's ineffective callup earlier this season, but here's a set of fun facts to consider: 1.) Last season Connolly was a 2nd Team AHL All-Star scoring at a pace of .887 points per game. 2.) This season, despite fears Connolly's development has stagnated, Connolly is now scoring at a .958 points per game clip. My point is this: folks giving up on Connolly might be wise to wait until the next time he gets a cup of coffee with Tampa Bay before drawing any final conclusions, because he's still getting better.

With the victory, Syracuse climbs back to within 4 points of eighth place in the Eastern Conference. They face Providence on Friday.
