Planet USA got pummelled by the Canadian AHLers tonight 9-4. Falcons center Ryan Vesce, who played for Planet USA, assisted on Patrick O'Sullivan's game opening goal. It was all downhill from there, however. Vesce finished -2 with three shots on goal.

O'Brien Returned to Springfield

The Tampa Bay Lightning have returned defenseman Doug O'Brien to Springfield of the AHL. The blueliner was recalled and played in two games after veteran Darryl Sydor was struck in the face with a puck in the team's 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. O'Brien returns to a depleted Falcons blueline which was forced to play five defensemen in their last two games.

Chiefs Acquire Backup For Cey

Yesterday the Johnstown Chiefs acquired goaltender Mike Betz from the Wheeling Nailers for cash. The 24 year old 5'10" 173 lb. netminder was a four year starter at Ohio State of the CCHA before taking a year off to serve in the Peace Corps. His best college season came as a junior when he posted a 20-11-5 record with a 2.24 GAA and a .904 save percentage. Prior to college he played two seasons with Sioux City of the USHL. To this point in his ECHL career he has played just one game with the Fresno Falcons in the 2004-2005 season. The move is an indication of the permanent status of goaltender Jonathan Boutin's callup to Springfield. Bolt Prospects has learned from the Lightning that the organization now has moved Boutin and Gerald Coleman ahead of Brian Eklund on the team's depth chart and have informed Eklund of his diminished role. Rumors last week in the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat about a potential trade of one of Springfield's goaltenders almost certainly revolved around Eklund. From this point forward, Boutin and Coleman are expected to fight it out to decide who the #3 goaltender in the organization will be.

Game Day 1/29: Pirates at Falcons

Throw Bootsy a bone guys... POR-3 SPR-2 (SO) Jonathan Boutin made 42 saves on 44 shots faced before falling in the shootout. Still, to come in from the ECHL and get 3 of 4 points in the weekend against the division leader is impressive, even if he couldn't make that one more save with a minute and a half left in the third to preserve the win. All you ask of your goaltenders is to give you a chance, and both Boutin and Coleman have done that for the Falcons this weekend. Nick Tarnasky and Timo Helbling had the Springfield goals. Adam Henrich, Chris Dingman and Marek Kvapil added assists. Game sheet from TheAHL.com.

Jaspers/O'Brien Recalled

Absent from the lineup for Springfield tonight against the Providence Bruins were center Jason Jaspers and defenseman Doug O'Brien. Both were recalled by the Lightning after Darryl Sydor and Rob DiMaio both left the game against the Flyers today after Sydor took a puck to the mouth and DiMaio's took a high stick. Both Jaspers and O'Brien have been playing well of late to earn the callup. Jaspers scored 2 goals in Springfield's come from behind triumph over Portland Friday night and had 5 goals and 9 points in his last 9 games. O'Brien has been solid defensively of late and has 8 assists in his last 10 games.

Game Night 1/28: Bruins at Falcons

Compared to the shellings the Falcons have endured this year against Providence, tonight was a positive sign. PRO-4 SPR-3 (SO) Gerald Coleman stopped 36 of 39 before losing in the shootout. Travis Brigley scored his first goal as a Falcon and added an assist. Marek Kvapil also had a goal and Jay Rosehill scored his first professional goal. The Falcons came within 29 seconds of victory, but Coleman couldn't quite shut the door. Gerard Dicaire's point streak was stopped at 4, but he did finish second on the team in shots behind Brigley with 4 tries on net. Coach Anzalone: Falcons Will Trade One of Their Goaltenders, Greco Out For Season

In an interview with Mike Mastovich of the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat published Friday, Chiefs Head Coach Frank Anzalone dropped the bombshell that Jonathan Boutin's recall is due to the impending trade of one of Springfield's goaltenders. Anzalone goes on to point out that the Chiefs only had 14 players on their roster as of Thursday night and that Lightning prospect Brady Greco will be gone for the rest of the season with shoulder surgery. Anzalone speculates that the many callups Springfield has made recently will be in the AHL to stay and that the Lightning organization feels that Boutin is ready for the AHL level for good. In order to fill their need for a netminder before Friday's game against Dayton, the Chiefs signed emergency backup Craig Rehodge.

Game Night 1/27: Falcons at Pirates

The first night of the Jonathan Boutin audition finished in dramatically positive fashion. SPR-4 POR-3 (OT) Boutin made 21 saves on 24 shots faced in the victory, his first AHL win. Gerard Dicaire had a pair of power play assists to extend his point streak to four. Chris Dingman had a goal and added a pair of helpers. Jason Jaspers had a pair of goals including the game winning overtime goal. New acquisition Travis Brigley did not suit up for the game.
