Barberio, Mark

CHL Game Night: 2-28-10

QMJHL

Halifax Mooseheads 2 @ Moncton Wildcats 7
D Mark Barberio, MCT: 0-2-2, +1, 0 PIM, 1 SOG
Season Totals: 57 GP, 12-42-54, +38, 54 PIM

If any win over your rival is a good win, then any weekend sweep of your rival ending with a blowout win is Christmas. While Barberio is eight points better than he has ever been in his QMJHL career, he’s three goals shy of his career high for goals, set last year in 66 games.

OHL

Windsor Spitfires 6 @ Sudbury Wolves 0
W Matias Sointu, SBY: 0-0-0, -1, 4 PIM (holding, cross-checking)
Season Totals: 44 GP, 7-13-20, -6, 16 PIM
With Sudbury: 22 GP, 4-6-10, -11, 10 PIM
With Ottawa: 21 GP, 3-7-10, +5, 6 PIM

The Spits destroyed Sudbury 6-0, outshooting them 40-16. Likely 2010 first overall pick Taylor Hall only managed two assists in the game. Hall is now at 95 points (36 goals) for the season (54 games). The Wolves are tied for seventh in the East.

Oshawa Generals 4 @ Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors 7
G Michael Zador, OSH: Loss, 24 saves on 31 shots
Season Totals: 45 GP, 14-24-2-1, 4.07 GAA, .886 sv%, 2 SO

Oshawa is now the worst defensive team in the league with 270 goals against in 62 games. My calculator tells me that's 4.35 goals against per game, yet Zador’s GAA has just now topped the 4.00 mark. Despite their lack of defense, the Gens are just two points back of Niagara for the eighth spot in the East.

CHL Game Night: 2-27-10

QMJHL

Moncton Wildcats 4 @ Halifax Mooseheads 3
D Mark Barberio, MCT: 0-0-0, -1, 2 PIM, 1 SOG
Season Totals: 56 GP, 12-40-52, +37, 54 PIM

Any win over your rival is a good win. In the game, Moncton goalie Nicola Riopel (Flyers 5/09) allowed his first goal in his last 179min 59sec played. It was the second longest shutout streak in the QMJHL history behind Mathieu Chouinard (Chicoutimi) in 97-98.

OHL

Kingston Frontenacs 5 @ Belleville Bulls 4 (OT)
C Richard Panik, BEL: 0-1-1, E, 2 PIM (holding)

With Bulls: 21 GP, 7-7-14, -11, 20 PIM

RW Kyle DeCoste, BEL: 1-0-1, E, 0 PIM

Niagara IceDogs 1 @ Barrie Colts 6
LW/C Alex Hutchings, BAR: 1-0-1, +1, 0 PIM
Season Totals: 61 GP, 43-29-72, +41, 52 PIM

Already with a career high for goals and points, Hutchings is starting to flirt with the 50-goal plateau.

WHL

Regina Pats 3 @ Saskatoon Blades 0
RW Carter Ashton, REG: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
Season Totals: 60 GP, 23-26-49, -5, 100 PIM
With Regina: 32 GP, 10-13-23, +3, 48 PIM
With Lethbridge: 28 GP, 13-13-26, -8, 52 PIM

Ashton hasn’t scored a goal in eight games. A day after losing an important road game to eighth-place Swift Current, the Pats shutout the conference’s top team (tied) in their own barn, holding them to 19 shots. Swift Current also won, however, so Regina remains a seemingly insurmountable nine points back of a playoff spot.

Vancouver Giants 3 @ Swift Current Broncos 5
C/W James Wright, VAN: 0-0-0, -3, 0 PIM
Season Totals: 15 GP, 4-10-14, -1, 4 PIM
With Tampa Bay: 43 GP, 2-3-5, -9, 18 PIM

The Giants have now lost two in a row. Wright hasn’t registered a point in his last three games and is minus-six during that time.

D Mark Barberio, MCT: 0-0-0, E, 2 PIM, 2 SOG
Season Totals: 55 GP, 12-40-52, +38, 54 PIM

A rare night where Barberio doesn’t register a point, however, the team gets a solid win. They remain second in the Atlantic Division, 10 points behind powerhouse St. John.

OHL

Barrie Colts 2 @ Brampton Battalion 1
LW/C Alex Hutchings, BAR: 1-0-1, +1, 0 PIM
Season Totals: 58 GP, 40-26-66, +37, 52 PIM

The Gens hung on for the rare road win and broke their 10-game losing streak. Zador broke his personal eight-game losing streak.

Windsor Spitfires 5 @ Barrie Colts 8
LW/C Alex Hutchings, BAR: 2-0-2, -2, 0 PIM
Season Totals: 57 GP, 39-26-65, +36, 52 PIM

This big match-up between conference leaders turned into a shootout. Barrie was leading 7-2 at one point before the Spits closed to 7-5. Hutchings added an empty netter to put the game away for the Colts.

A nice bounce-back win for the Pats, who gave up 10 in Brandon Friday night.

C/W James Wright, VAN: 0-0-0, +1, 0 PIM
Season Totals: 11 GP, 4-8-12, +5, 4 PIM

Barberio passed the 50-point mark for the first time in his career in a blowout win over Vincent Lecavalier's alma mater. Barberio improved his plus/minus to plus-37, third in the league among defensemen. His point total is good enough for sixth among QMJHL blueliners.

DeCoste extended his point streak to seven games. Panik has five points in his last three games, and 10 points in his last nine games. Zador started the game on the bench, but replaced Kevin Bailie, who allowed six goals on 30 shots to a last-place team. Oshawa has lost 10 in a row.

Niagara IceDogs 1 @ Sudbury Wolves 2
