Helenius and Seattle got the better of Jung and Kelowna in the first of a home-and-home set between the Thunderbirds and Rockets. The teams play again tonight (Saturday) in Seattle. Helenius's 1.62 Goals Against Average is tops in the WHL among goalies playing more than one game. His .922 save percentage is top-5.
Swift Current Broncos 3 @ Lethbridge Hurricanes 1
C Mitch Fadden, LET: 0-0-0, -1, 0 PIM
Fadden saw his five game point streak to start the season come to an end. Lethbridge outshot the Broncos 28-19.
Tri-City Americans 5 @ Prince George Cougars 2
C Dana Tyrell, PG: 0-0-0, -4, 2 PIM
Tyrell tied for the team’s worst plus/minus rating at minus-4, but the Prince George Citizen called Tyrell the Cougars' unquestioned leader during the game, continually taking pucks to the net. Dana Tyrell’s younger brother, Corey, scored his second goal of the season in the loss for Prince George. Traverse City Lightning free agent Colton Yellow Horn had a goal, an assist, was a plus-3, and was named Third Star for Tri-City.
Seattle Thunderbirds 2 @ Kamloops Blazers 3 (OT)
G Riku Helenius, SEA: OTL, 24 saves on 27 shots
Game Notes: Helenius’s first regular season game in North America was looking strong as he had a shutout through the first half of the game, but the T-Birds couldn’t hold a 2-0 lead and fell in overtime, 3-2 in Kamloops. Helenius is wearing No. 30 for Seattle.
Lethbridge Hurricanes 2 @ Medicine Hat Tigers 4
C Mitch Fadden, LET: 0-1-1, +1, 0 PIM
Game Notes: With his secondary assist, Fadden helped Lethbridge to an early 2-1 lead but the Hurricanes couldn’t hang on and dropped the second of a home-and-home series with the Tigers. The Hurricanes won on Friday. Fadden has a goal and an assist in two games this year.
Crisdotero also blogged some quotes from Lightning GM Jay Feaster today regarding the play of the team's prospects at the Traverse City tournament.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Feaster raves about the play of forward Radek Smolenak and admits several organizations expressed praise for Smolenak's play and lauds defenseman Mike Lundin's strong play in the tournament.
Bolt Prospects will have more on the Lightning organization's reaction to the Traverse City tournament later this week.
