CHL Game Report: 3/3 & 3/4

March 3:

Mississauga 2 @ Saginaw 8
Despite a win earlier this week, the IceDogs continue to struggle, this time getting crushed 8-2 in Saginaw. Chris Lawrence had an assist for Mississauga, who was only down 3-2 entering the third period. Lawrence was minus-1 with 4 PIM.

Oshawa 5 @ Erie 6 (Shootout)
The Otters snapped an 11-game losing streak and 7-game home losing streak with a 6-5 shootout win over super-prospect John Tavares and the Oshawa Generals Saturday night. Tavares had 1 first period goals against Lightning prospect Kevin Beech - Tavares' 60th and 61st goals of the year. Beech gave up 4 first period goals on 19 shots and did not see the ice for the remainder of the game. Justin Garay had 28 saves for the win for Erie.

Peterborough 3 @ Owen Sound 4
Marek Bartanus was scoreless with an even rating as the Owen Sound Attack registered a 4-3 home win over the Petes.

Kelowna 4 @ Prince George 7
The Cougars got revenge on last-place Kelowna with a 7-4 win Saturday night. Vladimir Mihalik scored his 7th goal of the year on the power play to pace Prince George. He was plus-1.

Spokane 0 @ Everett 3
Dane Crowley was scoreless and plus-1 in the Silvertips 3-0 shutout win over Spokane.

March 4:

Mississauga 2 @ Plymouth 8
The IceDogs finished their trip to Michigan with an 8-2 loss to the Whalers. That's 16 goals against in two games against Saginaw and Plymouth for Mississauga. Chris Lawrence was scoreless, minus-1, and had 4 PIM.

Erie 5 @ Toronto 4 (Overtime)
The Otters won their second game in as many days, beating Toronto St. Mike's 5-4 in overtime. Kevin Beech watched from the bench as Justin Garay stayed in net for Erie after beating Oshawa the night before.

CHL Game Night: 3/2

Brampton 3 @ Mississauga 5
The IceDogs snapped their 3-game losing streak, beating Brampton 5-3 at home. Chris Lawrence scored his 42nd goal of the year on the power play. He was also minus-1.

Owen Sound 3 @ Sarnia 7
Owen Sound outshot the Sting 43-27, including 19-6 in the third period, but the Attack could not win in Sarnia, falling 7-3. Marek Bartanus did not register a point and was minus-1 in the game.

Windsor 5 @ Erie 3
In a battle between the OHL's worst teams, the Spitfires beat Kevin Beech and the Otters 5-3 in Erie. Beech stopped 32 of 37 in the loss. Erie is now 12 points behind Windsor for second last.

Kelowna 4 @ Prince George 2
Although the Cougars are pretty much locked in 3rd in the B.C. Division, it's never good to lose to a team 21 points behind you in the standings in your own barn. Vladimir Mihalik tied for the team "lead" with a minus-3 rating for the night. He did not register a point.

Portland 5 @ Everett 2
Portland was 71, that's right, 71 points behind first place Everett in the standings entering Friday, yet the last-place Winterhawks soundly defeated the Silvertips 5-2 in Everett. Dane Crowley was scoreless and minus-2. Portland was beaten 9-1 by Spokane, who is one spot above them in the U.S. Division standings, earlier this week. The game between Portland and Everett featured a classic WHL brawl with 3 seconds left in the game with both goalies getting involved.

CHL Game Night: 2/28

Owen Sound 1 @ Guelph 4
Marek Bartanus did not register a point, was even, and had a minor penalty for delay-of-game in the Attack's 4-1 loss in Guelph Wednesday night.

Everett 4 @ Kamloops 1
Dane Crowley was plus-1 with 4 minutes in penalties for Everett as they defeated the Blazers in Kamloops, 4-1. Although the WHL doesn't list it on their web site, Washington online newspapers say Crowley scored an empty net goal, his 8th goal of the season.

CHL Game Night 2/27: Mihalik vs. Crowley in a Doubleheader

You don't see this every day...

Everett 4-3 @ Prince George 6-2
Prince George and Everett played a doubleheader of sorts Tuesday night, first completing a suspended game from October, then playing their regularly scheduled contest.

The game between the teams in Prince George on October 28th, 2006 was called after 40 minutes of play due to damage to the ice at the CN Centre. The Cougars held a 2-1 lead over the Silvertips after the first two periods. On Tuesday night, four months later and with different players, Everett scored a "late" goal to send the October game to extra time, where the Silvertips won the game in a shootout, 3-2. Dane Crowley who was playing in Swift Current during the first two periods of this game, did not register a point for Everett in its conclusion. Vladimir Mihalik, who dressed for Prince George in October, did not register a point, but had 6 minutes in penalties -- 4 in the first two periods and 2 last night. Both players had even ratings. Everett technically dressed 25 players for this game, compared to Prince George's 23.

In the second game, Mihalik and the Cougars got revenge on the 'Tips, defeating the WHL leaders 6-4. Crowley won the individual battle on the scoresheet with Mihalik, earning 2 assists to Mihalik's 1. Crowley was even and Mihalik was plus-1 and both had 1 minor penalty.

Prince George has clinched a playoff spot and Everett, who has a one point lead on Medicine Hat for first overall in the league, has clinched the U.S. Division title and is 14 points up on Vancouver for the Western Conference's top seed.

CHL Game Night: 2/24

Sudbury 5 @ Mississauga 4 (Shootout)
The IceDogs dropped their second straight home game to a team behind them in the conference standings, this time losing out on one point in a 5-4 shootout loss to Sudbury. The Wolves are 14 points behind Mississauga in the Central Division. Chris Lawrence scored his career-high 40th goal of the year in the loss, and was also even with charging and hooking minors. Lawrence shot first for the IceDogs in the shootout, but did not score.

London 3 @ Owen Sound 6
Despite having first rounders Bobby Ryan and Bobby Sanguinetti, Owen Sound sits third-worst in the Western Conference at 64 points. However, the Attack has clinched a playoff spot because all but two teams make it in and Erie (29 points) and Windsor (39) are so bad. London, on the other hand, has a league-best 90 points. This proves why games are played on the ice and not on computer screens as the Attack soundly beat the Knights 6-3 Saturday night. Marek Bartanus was scoreless and minus-1 in the game.

Ottawa 7 @ Erie 3
The good news is Erie finally held a team under 30 shots against (27), but the bad news is they still gave up 7 goals. Kevin Beech was responsible for a lot of those as he stopped just 20 of 25 shots before being pulled after 2 periods. His backup, Jonathan Laniel, stopped 0 of 2 in the third period when the 67’s called off the dogs.

Prince George 6 @ Kamloops 3
Vladimir Mihalik had two power play assists to help the Cougars defeat the Blazers in Kamploops, 6-3. Mihalik was even with an interference minor in the fight-filled game.

Everett 1 @ Seattle 4
Dane Crowley was a team worst minus-4 in Everett’s 4-1 loss to the Thunderbirds in Seattle.

CHL Game Night: 2/23

Erie 1 @ Kitchener 2
The lowly Erie Otters went into Kitchener to face the Rangers - the team with the league's third-best point total at 82 - and nearly pulled off the upset thanks to Kevin Beech. Beech stopped 50 of 52 shots in the 2-1 loss, including 22 of 23 in the first period. The Otters held a brief 1-0 lead midway through the first period. The Otters were outshot 52-28. Beech was named the game's third star.

Ottawa 5 @ Mississauga 2
Chris Lawrence had a rare scoreless night, finishing minus-2 with a roughing minor as the IceDogs dropped a home game to Ottawa. Considering the 67's are more than 20 points behind Mississauga in the standings, this was a bad loss for the IceDogs. Mississauga is 5 points behind division leading Barrie with 2 games in hand, so these lost 2 points will hurt.

Prince George 5 @ Spokane 2
The Cougars got revenge for a loss to the Chiefs earlier this week as they scored three third period goals to beat Spokane 5-2 on the Chiefs' home ice. Vladimir Mihalik was scoreless and even for the game, and should probably check the curve on his stick as he had two minor penalties for delay-of-game.

Everett 4 @ Vancouver 3 (Shootout)
The Silvertips squeaked by the Giants 4-3 in a shootout in Vancouver Friday night. Dane Crowley did not register a point, but had an even rating and received 15 minutes in penalties for a first period fight against Florida Panthers first round pick Kendall McArthur. He was given a 10 minute misconduct on the play, but no instigator. It's good to see Crowley avoiding the rush and hating the Panthers early. The fight happened just three seconds into the game. Apparently Crowley got a few good shots in, but McArthur scored the takedown.

CHL Game Night: 2/20

Prince George 3 @ Everett 4 (Overtime)
Dane Crowley had two assists, including the primary assist on Everett's overtime winner, to help the Silvertips to a 4-3 win over visiting Vladimir Mihalik and Prince George Tuesday. Mihalik had a power play assist for the Cougars, who were outshot 40-13. Mihalik was minus-1 with a boarding minor, and Crowley had an even rating.

CHL Game Night: 2/18

Mississauga 6 @ Ottawa 3
Chris Lawrence had 3 primary assists today to help the IceDogs defeat the 67's 6-3 in Ottawa. Lawrence was also a plus-1.

Everett 2 @ Chilliwack 3 (Overtime)
Everett went into expansion Chilliwack and came away with an overtime loss, 3-2. Dane Crowley was scoreless and even with a minor penalty for Everett. His scoreless streak is now at 8 games.

Everett is second in the WHL in points with 95. Medicine Hat (who produced Darren Reid) has 96 to lead the league and is on a 17 game win streak. Everett has 5 games in hand on Medicine Hat, however.

Chilliwack is tied with Kelowna (Justin Keller) for the second fewest points in the league at 43. Portland has a league worst 32 points.

CHL Game Night: 2/16 (Updated)

Mississauga 5 @ Brampton 0
Chris Lawrence had an assist in the IceDogs win and also finished plus-2. A relatively quiet night for Lawrence considering his recent hot streak.

Erie 2 @ Owen Sound 7
Do you criticize Kevin Beech for letting in 7 goals, or praise him for making 72 saves? Judging from the fact he was named the game's third star as the visiting goalie, it's the latter. It also turns out Beech was the "lucky" goalie to be in net when Marek Bartanus finally scored. Bartanus had a goal and was plus-2. Bartanus had gone 24 games without scoring a goal. It was his fifth of the year.

Vancouver 1 @ Prince George 3
Vladimir Mihalik was scoreless and plus-2 with 4 PIM as Prince George beat Vancouver 3-1 Friday. Mihalik had tripping and holding calls against him.

Kelowna 5 @ Everett 6 (Shootout)
Dane Crowley was plus-1 and scoreless for the Silvertips in their 6-5 home shootout win over Kelowna.
