Defenseman Matt Smaby has been named Third Team All WCHA in addition to making the All Tournament Team for North Dakota's championship winning team at this year's WCHA tournament.
The brackets for this year's NCAA Tournament are out and USCHO has the matchups and some analysis. Harvard will go through their yearly ritual of losing a close game to Mike Lundin and Maine in the first round in the Albany regional. In the Grand Forks, North Dakota regional Matt Smaby and the Fighting Sioux will get some home cooking against Michigan before a potential second round matchup against PJ Atherton and Minnesota who square off with Holy Cross in their opener. Finally, in Worcester, Joe Pearce's Boston College Eagles will take on Cornell fresh off a drubbing in the ECACHL final game.
The Lightning are starting to feed off the home cooking and are looking more and more like a team that will get the opportunity to defend their Cup in the postseason.
John Grahame stopped 30 of 32 shot faced as the Lightning's goaltending situation is beginning to go into a stretch of being settled down. Ryan Craig had a pair of assists on goals by Pavel Kubina and Vincent Lecavalier. I'd have to check the numbers, but it feels like Craig is scoring at a points per game clip that is actually greater than what he was doing in the minors. Paul Ranger was -1 in 17:50 of ice time with two hits and two blocked shots. Ryan Craig was +1 in 14:55 with 0 shots on goal, 3 hits and 1 blocked shot. Big Evgeny Artyukhin was -1 in 8:52 with 1 shot on goal and 3 hits.
Tonight was Ryan Craig's 34th NHL game, 7 away from graduation under Bolt Prospects criteria.

The adjustment period for Gabe Winer to the pros? Apparently, about one game.
Gabe Winer with a 39 save shutout in just his second professional game. The Chiefs were outshot 39-19. Adam Henrich had the game winning goal for Johnstown and Andre Deveaux had an assist on Randy Rowe's third period insurance marker.

One night removed from his first AHL shutout Jonathan Boutin was run early after one period allowing 3 goals on 8 shots faced. He was relieved by Morgan Cey whose AHL debut went less than swimingly allowing 4 goals on 18 shots faced. Timo Helbling scored the Falcons' lone goal on assists by Norm Milley and Doug O'Brien. O'Brien now has 28 points in 64 games this season. Brian Eklund got revenge on his old mates stopping 21 of 22 for Providence. Couldn't stop a beach ball two months ago, but I digress.
